Sherri Evans discussed Bowl for Vets at the Alley on Jan 25^th (see Sherri to participate)
Darkhorse lubed the ALR shed lock (?)
Russ Wallace suggested we participate in Arena events as a fund raiser. More info to follow.
Doug Lehman asked about putting a bowling night together just for fun. He also mentioned that the May poker run meetings will start in Feb.
Jerry Acknowledged Doug Lehman and Greg Bauer for being horseshoe tournament champions at this summers State ALR rally. The engraved plaque stays at 136 again for another year.
Opened up the floor for officer nominations. All unopposed positions went unchanged and were declared winners. Assistant Sgt at Arms ballot was cancelled. Darkhorse made a motion and was seconded by Little John to have Ditch leave the room and have a vote by show of hands. Ditch was declared the winner by show of hands. Rick Johnson assisted in the installation of the new officers:

Due to all graves being covered with wreaths, the $500 Post 136 voted to donate remains in obligated monies for next year.

Operation Star Tree - $1133 spent on 25 stars.

Operation Holiday Surprise - Riders donated $600 & the Legion donated $500.
Welcome Home Monday, 12 December for Shawn Williams, who was wounded by an IED in Afghanistan.
The scholarship requirements remain unchanged from last year. Topic is “What have Veterans done for our Nation and how has it affected me personally.”
Summarized the Chapter Report to date.

13832 hours, 146951 miles and $15,348.60 in donations, year to date.

Post 10 FYBO Poker Run is 14 January, 2012, starting in Winfield.

Warrior Transition Battalion Toys Donation request from Department. Terry Houck made a motion, seconded by John DeArmond, to donate $100. Motion Passed.
Terry Houck discussed the escort for the Quilts of Valor in Mid to Late March, 2012, to the Warriors Transition Battalion for the Quilt Presentation to the 4/4 Cavalry, who has a high casualty rate from the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan.
Director authorized $62.50 to pay for the next year’s web domain service.
John DeArmond questioned possibility of Lifetime ALR membership. No additional discussion at this time.
Post 10 Freeze Your Butt Off Poker Run is 14 January, 2012, starting in Winfield.

Kevin Conover discussed drawings for wooden statue and pistol during event.

Jerry Kirk questioned July 2012 meeting date. No confirmation at this time. Date may change based on new Directors call.
Discussion concerning new plans for building remodel as they relate to $5000 donation by ALR 136 to the Patio Fund. Russ Wallace, Legion Finance Officer will ensure money is designated for Patio construction only.
Flint McPeak requested an Airport Welcome Home for Mulvane Police Officer Friday’s son who is returning from Navy A School. Director to contact Flint to discuss.

Motion by Ben “Ditch” Roloff, seconded by Don Carey, to reimburse Dwayne Stewart $380 for the hats given to veterans during Veterans Appreciation Day. Motion Passed.
Motion by Connie “Pretzels” Berry, seconded by Ben “Ditch” Roloff, to purchase 100 Angel Pins to be given to wives or mothers during sendoffs and welcome homes. Total cost $356.24. Motion Passed.

New Business/Discussion Items:

Embroidered blankets to be given to patients at the VA during the 4 December Banana Run. Must be ordered no later than Monday, 14 November.

Dennis Scuffham advised most patients already have several blankets.
After considerable discussion, Jerry Kirk made motion, seconded by Bruce Simmons, to match the amount spent last year and allow the officers to determine what to purchase. Motion Failed.

Motion by Barb Giovanni, to purchase $10 gift certificates for canteen for VA patients unable to leave the premises, and $10 Golden Corral gift certificates for those that can, seconded by Denny McDonough. After discussion. Barb rescinded the motion.
Motion by Barb Giovanni, seconded by Denny McDonough, to purchase $10 canteen gift certificates for all VA patients. Motion Passed.

Chuck Barshney to make arrangements for gift certificates.

Motion by Pat Thacker, seconded by Ben Roloff, to donate $600 to Operation Holiday Surprise. Motion Passed.
Motion by Mark Bush, seconded by Don Carey, to add $500 to obligated money for Operation Star Tree at McConnell. Motion Passed.

Terri Lehman volunteered to obtain stars from tree.
Volunteers to help shop are Barb Giovanni, Jerry & Connie Berry, Asonjia Stewart, Denny McDonough, and Monica Barshney.

Jan and Greg Bauer presented a check to the membership for $500 to be added to the Operation Star Tree fund.
Motion by Ben Roloff, seconded by Pat Thacker, to donate 400 bottles of soda to the Big Red Turkey Run scheduled for 19 November. Motion Passed.

Sherry Evans advised Keller-Williams Realty has fundraiser to support their VA Red Day benefit 12 May, 2012. Drawing tickets available for suggested donation of $1.
Motion by Jerry Armstrong, seconded by Don Carey, to donate $150 to the ALAVA to assist patients in purchasing Christmas gifts from the VA store for their families. Motion Passed.

Motion changed to $4500 since we just passed previous motion to add $500 to obligated money for KVH. Seconded by Jerry “Bowhunter” Kirk. Motion failed.

NewBusiness/Discussion Items:

Motion by Jerry “Bowhunter” Kirk, seconded by Ben “Ditch” Roloff, authorizing purchase of 400 challenge coins at best available price. Previous supplier raised prices over $2 per coin since last order. Motion Passed.
Motion by Terri “Shirt Babe” Lehman, seconded by Terry “Darkhorse” Houck, to provide free breakfast buffet for Mulvane High School student volunteers for the 4 December Banana Run. Motion Passed.
Rick Babinger rescinded his motion to obligate $500 to Wreaths across America after it was pointed out we had obligated $136 at last month’s meeting. Jerry “Bowhunter” Kirk made new motion, seconded by Sherry Evans, to increase obligated money for this item from $136, by $364, to a total of $500. Motion Passed
Rick Babinger discussed building renovations, suggesting alternative approach to be discussed in more detail at separate meeting.
Jake “Lucky Dog” Defrees made a motion, seconded by Jerry “Papa J” Ward, to donate $550 to the Quilts of Valor. Motion was amended to $1000. Motion Passed.
Jerry “Bowhunter” Kirk read Thank You from Honor Flight participant Bill Crow.
Jerry “Bowhunter” Kirk suggested a group together to go to different locations to visit veterans on 11 November, Veterans Day.
Terry “Darkhorse” Houck advised there is a new book available called “The Wall”. It can be ordered for $10. Watch for additional info through email.
Reminded membership that new scholarship is available. Spread the word so we can get more than one applicant this year.

· 10^th Anniversary Patch Issue:Director notified 1 June that patches ordered on behalf of the 10^thAnniversary Committee on 11 May, and paid for with the Director’s personalcredit card on 24 May, were disapproved. Informed at Legion meeting 6 June thatpatches were to be surrendered, without reimbursement, within 10 days or PostCharter would be pulled.

o Directorprovided timeline of events from creation of 10^th AnniversaryCommittee to date.

o Linda Kirby provided information from herdiscussions by phone with National.

o Rick Babinger provided opinion concerning ourinvolvement with the event since it was taken over by Department withoutnotification, the beneficiaries of any proceeds were changed without consultingthe committee, and the patch was disapproved 2 weeks prior to the event eventhough it was submitted 2 months prior.

o Requestfull disclosure of disposition of monies collected by Department from thisevent.

o DwightMiller, Director ALR 268, Sedgwick, provided additional information about theevent and will suggest to all area posts they kick in to offset the loss to theDirector.

o Inresponse to various suggestions on how to render the patches unusable beforesurrendering them, Doug Lehman recommended the patches be returned with nodamage.

o Linda Kirby agreed to $1.00 retainer should herlegal expertise be required.

o Directorsuggested Deb Lynch, ALR Post 81, be an advisor on this issue due to herexperience as District Commander and with Department issues.

o Recommendationmade to surrender patches to Department and include letter of protest.

o BenRoloff made a motion, seconded by Terry Houck, to reimburse the Director forthe cost of the patches. Passed unanimously.

o Recommendationmade that response to National should be signed by the Post Commander and theALR Director.

Craig Samp from Post 81 (El Dorado) is looking for ideas on some way to honor Julie Clements (Anderson), a former reporter for the Derby Reporter, who has covered many stories about the American Legion Riders and Kansas Patriot Guard. She has breast cancer and has been undergoing chemotherapy.
Rick Babinger requested max attendance at the Legion Meeting on 7 February for discussion of ongoing bldg expansion. Greg Bauer thanked for help with architectural input.

Darkhorse made a presentation to Commander Scuffham of the Sedgwick County Commissioners "2010 Chaisman's Award" to the American Legion Riders and Kansas Patriot Guard, since it will be displayed at AL 136 before rotating through area posts.
Darkhorse and Greg (Wild Thing) Bauer presented past Director Doug (Grey Eagle) Lehman with a plaque for his previous 2 years of outstanding leadership on behalf of the membership.
Darkhorse and Wild Thing also presented Doug and Terri (Shirt Babe) Lehman, our ALR Secretary, with a gift certificate to Ultra Modern Pool and Patio.
Commander Scuffham made a motion to donate a paver from the ALR to the Operation Freedom Memorial (OFP), and will bring the matter up at the Legion meeting. Suggested each group donate $50 to purchase one paver for a total of $200. Motion was tabled until all groups could discuss individually. Will be readdressed at next meeting under old business.

Christmas VA Banana Run December 5. Post opens for breakfast at 8:30 AM, assemble decorated sacks at 11:00 AM, briefing at 11:45 AM, depart at Noon. Sacks will contain sugar free goodies, fruit, travel cups, Veteran hats, and beanie babies. Voices of McConnell will join us and sing Christmas Carols.
Patriot Guard Highway cleanup went well – 36 participated

By-Law change discussed at October meeting pertaining to retaining membership was presented and approved by membership
Big Red “1” Turkey Run November 20. Staging details on ALR Calendar. Reminded of Fort Riley requirements: helmet, full-finger gloves, boots, long sleeves, registration, insurance card, and driver’s license
Jerry Allen provided additional information on the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Bruce Simmons worked with Wal-Mart for the purchase of 4-37” TVs ($375.00 each) and mounts ($25.00 each). Jerry also advised cost of four vehicle decals would be $449.11. Total cost including tax is $2173.91. Donations were received from Post 136, Post 136 SAL, and Post 10; $500.00, $350.00, and $500.00 respectively. After discussion, motion made by Ben Roloff for the ALR to pick up difference between the total cost and above donations which equates to $823.91. Motion passed. Individual donations by John Kaufman, Pat Stanley, and Chuck Barshney; $500.00, $100.00, and $73.00 respectively, and to be set aside as obligated money for future Kansas Veterans Home needs. Special thanks to the committee (Jerry Allen, Phil Giovanni, Terry Houck, Rick Johnson, and Jerry Ward) for their work on this project. Details to follow on delivery of TVs/decals
Nominations for 2011 Officers will be held at the December meeting. Job descriptions for each position were provided. 2011 dues must be paid in to vote at January meeting.
Special quilt presentation to Ron and Sherry McMahon, parents of Fallen Hero Captain Jason McMahon, November 15. Stage at the Post at 4:30 PM, depart at 4:55 PM. Thanks go out to Greg and Jan Bauer for their generosity and thoughtful consideration.

· John Wilson advised of changes to website for Operation Freedom Memorial (OFM) and ability to purchase 4TROOPS concert tickets through the website – www.ofm-ks.com .

New Business/Discussion Items:

· Proposed by-law change concerning retaining membership if motorcycle is sold due to illness or inability to ride safely. After a lengthy discussion, decision was made to re-write the by-law change and address at the November meeting. Director and Co-Director will revise.

· Discussed Big Red “1” Turkey Run on Saturday, November 16. 150 turkeys provided by Troop Support Ride for our Wounded Warrior and their families. Discussed other food items needed. Motion made by Rick Travis, seconded by Phil Giovanni, to donate 75 cans of yams and 75 cans of cranberry sauce. Motion carried.

· Director reminded everyone to begin thinking about our 2011 elections. Need new ideas/leadership for the upcoming year.

· Jerry Allen briefed on this year’s Wichita Toy for Tots, Sunday, November 7. Discussed past year’s practice of flying Marine Flags at the end of the procession in honor of the Marine Corps Reserve. After discussion, membership agreed to follow this tradition.

- Doug Lehman summarized the Honor Flight fundraiser at Prairie Rose Chuckwagon – raised $27,685 – 24 members attended and donated over $1200.

- Thanked Barb Giovanni and Diana Nelson for their support in working the 2^nd Annual Rip’s Bikers against Diabetes Ride.

- Sherry Evans informed everyone that the Wichita Veteran’s Day parade will be November 6^th.

- Discussed request from Kansas ALR Department Chairman, Don Behrens, to contribute to the Warrior Transition Battalion project and purchase some “Smart Pens.” Motion made by Ben Roloff to donate $500.00. Motion carried. Don Carey also donated $100.00.

- Advised that McConnell Air Force Base was looking for WWII Veterans to participate in the opening ceremony for the Open House on September. If anyone is interested, inform Director.

Meeting called to order at 3:01PM: Total present: 73 (66 members and 7 guests)

Guests: Katy Vickers and several members of the Quilts of Valor briefed the membership that 197 quilts were made from Greg (Ebay) Hansen memorial funds. Those funds have now been depleted. 486 quilts have been made over the past four years and presented to Wounded Warriors. Additional funds are needed. The discussion of any donation was addressed under New Business.

Melinda McDonough, wife of ALR 136 member, Dennis McDonough, donated a beautiful quilt to the ALR in appreciation for our attendance at a family member’s funeral and to raise money and continue our cause. We will find an appropriate time to auction the quilt during a future fundraiser. Our thanks go out to Melinda and Dennis and their family for their generous contribution.

Betty Jean Pulliam, Gold Star Mother, thanked all those who were present at the Honor and Remember Flag Ceremony at Fort Leavenworth. Betty displayed the flag and explained each color’s meaning.

· Greg Bauer read a thank you card from Kaye Watkins (VA) for ALR member Don Carey’s bicycle donation for the homeless. Letter received from the Honor Flight thanking us for our $500.00 donation to sponsor Benjamin Brooks. Shanda Vangas donated $40.00 to the ALR on behalf of her father, Ron Vangas.

Director’s Corner and Old Business:

· Sherry Evans briefed the membership on our support of the Gold Star Families’ float for the Wichita Veterans Day parade. Dan Benson volunteered his truck and trailer. Rick Babinger advised the Post has a Soldiers Cross that can be used on the float. Charlie Nguyen volunteered to be in uniform and guard the Soldiers Cross. Skirting, banners, flags, etc, being worked. Motion made to obligate up to $100.00 for costs. Motion carried.

· Doug Lehman reminded everyone of the 2^nd Annual Rip’s Bikers against Diabetes Ride, Saturday, July 31. One of the stops is our Post.

· Advised the car flags orders were cancelled due to not enough orders being received.

· Clarified the difference between donations to the Legacy Run and Legacy Fund.

· Reminded membership of our donation of $350.00 to Lynn Murch, Wounded Warrior.

New Business/Discussion Items:

· Discussed Quilts of Valor’s (QOV) need for additional funds. Motion made to donate $550.00 to QOV. Motion carried. Additionally, ALR members Jim Finneran and Dan Vickers donated $100.00 each. Total donation of $750.00 will be presented to the QOV at our Veterans Appreciation Day on September 11.

· Solicited discussion about the possibility of hosting the 2013 ALR State Rally. Obstacles addresses: insufficient room for approximately 200 Riders, shower facilities, hotels. Open.

· Briefed membership on Prairie Rose Chuckwagon/Kansas Cowboys WWII Veterans benefit Saturday, July 31, to raise money for the Wichita Honor Flight. Consensus was to support this effort by our attendance. Email will be sent to obtain list of those interested.

· Advised that Asonjia Stewart will head up our planning for Veterans Appreciation Day. Initial planning meeting date pending. Discussed ALR covering costs. Motion made to cover all costs of food, soda, and water. These items will be free to all attendees. · Provided information about the McConnell Open House/Air Show on Saturday/Sunday, September 25/26. ALR will do a high-speed (about 35-40mph) and low-speed pass down the runway by the spectators with flags on bikes. Solicited volunteers to proceed with planning. - Re-addressed previously obligated monies (up to $1000) to Legacy Scholarship Fund and briefed on HR Bill 2345 Education for Children of Fallen and Marine Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship. After discussion, Ben Roloff made a motion to donate the $1000 to this year’s Legacy Run and review impact of other initiatives in 2011. Motion carried.

- Doug Lehman briefed on vandalism at Peabody cemetery and ALR 256 replacement of 10 flags

- Discussed request from ALR 256 to assist the town of Cassoday in obtaining a flag and flag pole. John Wilson advised the Veterans Memorial Park of Wichita, Inc (VMPWI) had already donated the pole.

- Talked about ALR 4 member, Star Northern’s, wife of Bill (Bones) Northern, need for a liver transplant and our assisting with expenses. Pat Thacker made a motion to donate $300. Motion carried.

- Thanked members John Wise, Charlie Nguyen, and Dennis McDonough for volunteering during Bikers Edge Birthday Celebration.

Fischer, ALR 256, all talked about this and previous year’s Legacy Run.

All members who transfer into ALR 136 who were previously grandfathered under our by-laws, paragraph XI (B) will continue to be grandfathered and authorized to wear the ALR Eagle Patch with Kansas Chapter at the bottom and Post 136 rocker at the top.
- Reminded membership of March 1 deadline for application for ALR Scholarship

- Asonjia Stewart provided update on upcoming Pancake and Sausage Feed (March 20) and planning for 2nd Annual Poker Run (May 8). Email will be sent requesting committee volunteers.

- Discussed possible donation to support the Honor Flight. Membership decided to wait to see if a local WWII Veteran was interested and then re-address donation.
- Director read a letter from Anita Dixon, Wichita Chapter President of the American Gold Star Mothers, concerning the Fisher House Foundation. Motion was made to donate $100.00 to this cause. Motion carried.
- John DeArmond advised that vehicle magnets were in.
- Director provided information concerning supporting ALR 129 (Lyons) for their 1st Annual Hog Roast on May 15. Working details for possible rental of Unified Party Bus. Details to follow.
- Numerous thank you and reminders: Chuck Barshney reminded everyone not for forget the continued sacrifices our troops make. Special thanks went out to Linda Thacker as she continues to do an outstanding job embroidering flags for funerals, send offs, and homecomings. Betty Jean Pulliam honored those who have escorted her on missions: Terry Houck, Mike Vore, and John Kimball and presented those present a patch.
- Rick Johnson made a motion to set aside $500.00 for possible future donation to the Honor Flight. Motion carried.

Special Presentations: Terry (Darkhorse) Houck with the assistance of ALR 136 Officers made the below special presentations:

US Navy Veteran Charles Liles, bagpiper for Fallen Heroes and Veteran’s funeral missions, was presented a certificate of appreciation, an ALR 136 challenge coin, a Support the Troops t-shirt, and a Veteran’s hat for his many years of service to the Patriot Guard and American Legion Riders.

Gold Star Mother Betty Jean Pulliam was presented an American flag display case in honor of her husband, WWII Veteran Leonard Pulliam, who passed away December 12, 1998.

Mulvane Police Officer Kevin Kichler was presented an American flag display case in honor of his father-in-law, WWII Veteran Jimmie Maish, who passed away December 7, 2009.

Gold Star Mother Anita Dixon was presented an In Memory of Certificate in honor of her son, US Army Sgt Evan Parker, who was killed in action October 26, 2005 – our third Patriot Guard mission.

Gold Star Mother, Denise Lang, whose son was killed in an automobile accident at Ft Bliss was a special guest.

Our own Air National Guard Senior Master Sergeant Mike Vore was honored at a ceremony in Rose Hill recognizing those who have served in the war zone fighting terrorism.

- Doug Lehman briefed on a proposed change to our by-laws and a motion was made to grandfather the wearing of the old one line patch with the ALR 136 rocker for those members who transferred into ALR 136 prior to January 10, 2010. All future transfers must wear the official ALR 136 back patch. Motion will be voted on at our February meeting
- Advised two certificates of deposits were purchased as voted on at last month’s meeting
- Briefed on Operation Troop Care for 2009 – 21 packages sent totaling 197 pounds

New Business/Discussion Items:

- Director updated membership on ALR 136 member, Dick Ziegler – triple by-pass surgery went well and expected to be released from Kansas Heart Hospital on January 11, 2010

- Director briefed on ALR 401 members Lee and Vicki Martinez who lost their 30-year old son, Erik, right before Christmas. Lee is also struggling with cancer and limited income. Between meetings, officers authorized a $100.00 donation. Motion made by Pat Thacker to contribute an additional $500.00. Motion carried. $100.00 was also donated by ALR 136 member, Presley Thomas. Thanks go out to all for their generous support.

- Director advised that Greg Bauer has revised our New Membership Package and will finalize upon adding a picture of the 2010 Officers. Based on feedback from the membership, a picture of our vest (front and back) will be included in the package so new members can see proper placement of patches. Another recommendation was to create a mentor program for new members and make sure they are aware of upcoming events, procedures, etc. Volunteers to be mentors are: Phil Giovanni, Dennis Scuffham, Asonjia Stewart, and Pat Thacker.

- Director thanked all the officers for their outstanding support during 2009 and presented outgoing VA Coordinator, Terry Houck, an Eagle plaque with glass inscription, for his five years of service to the ALR. Outgoing Chaplain Dave Stewart was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for his dedicated and loyal service as our Chaplain for the past two years. Linda Thacker was also recognized for her year-long superb job of embroidering flags.

Committee (Jerry Allen, Rick Babinger, Jerry Kirk, and Bill Logan) will review and present ALR Officers with their recommendations. Recommended changes will then be presented to the membership for approval.
- Dennis Scuffham recommended we consider certificates of deposits or a money market for some of our funds. He’ll check on options and present at our October meeting.
- Jerry Allen recommended we change when we nominate and elect officers. Made a motion to hold nominations in December and elections in January, versus our current November/December respectively. - Had Ron Vangas update everyone on Operation Troop Care and Adopt a Highway.
- Highlighted upcoming events: Old Settler’s Day Parade, ALR State Rally, Florence Labor Day Parade, Veterans Appreciation and Fun Day, and ALR Road Guard Training and Safety Class.
- Advised that we still needed a volunteer to be the Historian for the remainder of 2009.

New Business/Discussion Items:

- Rick Johnson advised that Jerry Allen had brought up the idea of creating an ALR 136 patch. Rick had several examples. Membership discussed artwork and approved red and black color scheme. Letter size and final artwork will be presented at our September meeting.

Guests: Betty Jean Pulliam displayed a picture of a 1987 Wichita Eagle page listing the 625 Kansans who lost their lives in Vietnam. A representative from the American Diabetes Association briefed on their upcoming fundraiser on September 12th. More details at www.ripsbadride.com .

Fundraising Committee Chairperson: Asonjia Stewart advised that September 12th will be a Local ALR Fun Day (horseshoes and ladder golf). Also, Ron Vangas suggested we combine the fun day and make it a Veteran’s Appreciation Day. Committee will develop details.

Veteran’s Coordinator Corner:

- Terry Houck read a certificate presented to deployed member Charlie (Blacktop) Nguyen
- Reminded everyone of our August 2nd and December 6th Banana Run
- Advised that the Kansas Patriot Guard now has two website’s www.kspatriotguard.org and www.patriotguardks.org
- Had John Wilson and Dennis Scuffham speak on the proposed Vietnamese Memorial. Latest information at www.ksvac.info . Wichita City Council meeting Tuesday, July 14.

- Rick Babinger discussed Dan Cane’s medical situation and advised that the Legion purchased a scooter. The Ladies Auxiliary donated $200.00 towards the $1200.00 cost. Motion made to donate $500.00 to split the remaining cost. Motion carried.
- Briefed on flag replacement program for the Mulvane community, solicited help for Old Settler’s Day, and encouraged return of raffle tickets.

Director’s Corner and Old Business:

- Doug Lehman provided membership statistics - 193 members; 2 deployed (Nate Mesta and Charlie Nguyen).
- Discussed personal conduct at ALR and Patriot Guard events and stressed compliance
- Had Ron Vangas brief on Operation Troop Care. Next shipment of packages will be in August. Donations can be brought to next meeting. List of desired/acceptable items will be sent via email with Troop Support Ride flyer.
- Discussed Legacy Run donation and ALR Scholarship. Jerry Allen made a motion to donate $1000.00 to the Legacy Run and use the remaining $1000.00 of obligated money to create an ALR 136 Scholarship. Seconded by Dan Benson. Motion carried. Committee of Terry Houck, John Miranda, John Wilson, and Gary Schultz developed eligibility requirements: 1) Graduating child of an ALR 136 member (also applies to grand and great grand children), 2) Graduating child of a Veteran or active duty military in the Mulvane High School, 3) Graduating Mulvane High School student who is a child of a Mulvane Police Officer, Firefighter, or Emergency Services Personnel. Further details will be worked by committee.
- Ron Vangas briefed on the Adopt A Highway program and advised that our application was submitted June 23rd and is pending with the Winfield Department of Transportation. Mulvane Lions Club had previously adopted a portion of the Patriot Guard Highway but agreed to move further west to let us take care of the entire 3 ½ miles. Additional information forthcoming.

New Business/Discussion Items:

- Greg Bauer advised of planned rider safety course and had Ben Roloff and Andy Webb highlight riding guidelines and passed out general group riding instructions to new members. Training date to be announced.
- Ron (Radar) Brengman’s memory bars are available.

Guests: Roger Attebury invited Cadet Major Andrew Edelman to our meeting to familiarize him with programs of the American Legion. Andrew just graduated from West High School. He was in the junior ROTC program and last month was named Cadet of the Year. Andrew has enlisted in the US Navy and will report for basic training in September.

- Updated status of ordering shirts and using Kansas Chapter. Department Executive Committee will meet in the near future to evaluate our request.
- In Ron Vangas’ absence, Terry Houck and Doug Lehman briefed on Operation Troop Care. Thus far, 14 packages have been shipped to deployed troops. Reiterated that focus will be on our deployed Post members and deployed sons and daughters of our Post membership. Motion made and passed to allocate $500.00 to purchase items for shipping but continue to use donations as well. Shipping costs will be separate and not paid from the $500.00. Note: After the meeting John Kimball donated $100.00 to help with this initiative. A list of soldier’s addresses will be emailed to everyone so they can write letters/send cards.
- Discussed creation of an ALR 136 Scholarship. Committee of John Miranda, John Wilson, Gary Schultz, and Terry Houck will come up with a proposal for our July meeting. Offered an idea of taking $1000 of the up to $2000 already obligated for the Legacy Fund to fund our scholarship – OPEN.
- In Ron Vangas’ absence, Terry Houck briefed on the Adopt A Highway program. Motion made and passed to do the entire 3 ½ miles of the Patriot Guard Highway. We must clean the highway 3 times a year for 2 years. More details later.

New Business/Discussion Items:

- Considerable discussion on contributing to the Eagle Valley Raptor Center to support their Sidewalk Campaign. Motion made to donate $100.00. Motion did not pass.
- Greg Bauer advised Christmas in a Box will be October 17. More details later.

Guest Speakers: James Williams from the American Red Cross spoke on The Ride for the Red Poker Run on June 20th. Brochures passed out and outlined specifics of this fundraiser. James Renaud, National Guard Recruiter, spoke on Military Appreciation Night, May 23rd, at Hartman Arena, at 5:00PM. First 100 get free football tickets.

Veteran’s Coordinator Corner:
- Terry Houck reminded everyone of our remaining 2009 Banana Runs (Aug 2 and Dec 6).
- Updated status of placing flags for fallen military. Anita Dixon will give her son’s flag to US Army Sgt Evan Parker’s father – placement not necessary. Debbie Drexler will advise of date to place flag for her son, US Army PFC Jeremy Drexler.
- Read thank you card and advised of $100.00 donation received from Liz Courtney, widow of US Army WWII Veteran, Bruce Courtney. Personal friend of Terry Houck. Donation to be split with ALR Post 408 (Derby), as they were Ride Captain for this funeral. We will purchase a memorial brick for Bruce and place the balance in the VA Christmas Fund.
- Briefed on status of Patriot Guard KIA and Veteran bricks. Thanked Jerry Allen and Ron Herndon for cleaning and maintenance of the memorial brick area.
- Highlighted those ALR members participating in the “Run For The Wall” and “Legacy Run.”
- Advised that the Kansas Patriot Guard website is down but hope to have it fixed soon.

Commander’s Corner:
- Rick Babinger advised that Post made 100% reporting.
- Outlined Memorial Day weekend activities. Friday, May 22, 5:00PM, put out crosses and flags on graves at Mulvane cemetery; Monday, May 25, 5:30AM, meet at Post and load 225 flags to put up Avenue of Flags – back at 6:00PM to take down. Need 10-20 Riders to fly American Flags.
- Thanked Mike Owens for his generosity in purchasing a 4” auger bit for use in digging flag pole holes at the cemetery. Instead of repayment Mike asked that the Post give 3 free memberships.

Director’s Corner and Old Business:
- Doug Lehman provided membership statistics - 181 members; 3 deployed (Chris Hurt, Nate Mesta, and Charlie Nguyen). Also, Rick and Karen Babinger’s son, SFC Jon Babinger and George and Nancy Smith’s son, CPL Daniel Smith, are deployed. Post member, Dan Morgan, is also deployed.
- Advised that 250 coins arrived but were old design. Derby Trophy and manufacturer reordering.
- Presented George and Nancy Smith a Blue Star Banner in honor of their son, US Marine CPL Daniel Smith. Also presented James and Donna Renaud a Blue Star Banner for their son.
- Updated status of ordering shirts and using Kansas Chapter. Department Executive Committee met at Department Convention and advised to resubmit our request and it will be considered.
- Had Ron Vangas brief on Operation Troop Care. Thus far, 8 packages have been shipped to deployed troops. Consensus was to focus on our deployed Post members and deployed sons and daughters of our Post membership. Also, will pass names of other non-ALR 136 deployed members to everyone to write letters/send cards.
- Thanked everyone for the great work done on the Poker Run, provided final statistics, and highlighted the significant contributions of Dave Stewart and Mike Owens.

New Business/Discussion Items:

- Area ALR Legacy Fund Fundraiser at Biker’s Edge on June 6. Rick and Karen Babinger volunteered to work the 9-11AM shift and Nancy Armstrong the 3-5PM shift.
- State Rally Grog Bowl needs ingredients. We will supply babe ruths, tootsie rolls, and milk duds.
- Post 401 Auxiliary is looking for old Harley Davidson or ALR t-shirts to make a quilt for their fundraiser in July. Turn in any shirts to Terri Lehman.
- Discussed ideas to support the Mulvane community. Possibly creating an ALR 136 Scholarship Fund. Put on hold pending Board of Governors discussion of the same idea. Also, discuss adopting the “Patriot Guard Highway.” Ron Vangas will check with KDOT. Another idea was to replace worn flags throughout the Mulvane community. Open.
- Post 256, Wichita, asked for volunteers to man our Post during their June 13 Poker Run. Gary Schultz and Ed Watson volunteered.
- Director recommended using extra gift cards from Poker Run for flooded ALR member, Bob Kierzek. In addition, motion made by Pat Thacker to donate $500.00. Both passed.

Meeting Dedication: Meeting dedicated to former Command Chief Master Sergeant John Kimball.

Special Presentations: Pat Culver, Department Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Committee presented a plaque from Mid-Winter Forum for Legacy Scholarship Fund donations. Clarence Carroll, WWII Veteran and member of the Sons of the American Revolution, presented each officer a certificate in recognition of exemplary patriotism in the display of the Flag of the United States of America. He left a certificate for each ALR member and passed out “Freedom Collection” sheets packed full of great information.

- Advised that 26 bricks for our Patriot Guard KIA and Veterans will be picked up this week.
- Provided statistics on Fallen Warriors/injured from the current War on Terrorism.
- Presented his position on use of “Kansas Chapter” on shirts/vests and following directives.
- Briefed on Greensburg Patriotic anniversary on May 2. Details forthcoming.

- Thanked Greg Bauer and Jim Jones for their work to protect/seal the bricks, stone, and bench area.
- Advised that “Thank You Ride” to Marion Western Graphics put on hold due to layoffs/economy.
- Solicited Poker Run committee updates and discussed signs, advertising, prizes, flyers, games, etc. Final general Poker Run meeting is April 27, 7PM, at the Post.
- Opened discussion on new coin design and pricing options. Jim Jones made a motion to approve the new design and purchase 250 coins with new vendor, Derby Trophy, and sandblasted style. Motion carried. John Miranda made a motion to sell each coin for $5.00. Motion carried.
- Reminded everyone to make Winter Park reservations.
- Shared information on the Certificate of Appreciation received from the McConnell Enlisted Spouse’s Club for our contribution to their annual “Operation Holiday Surprise.”

New Business/Discussion Items:
- Discussed status of using “Kansas Chapter” on shirts, hats, etc. Terry Houck read his position.
- Determined where monies would come from to support Legacy Run. Ben Roloff made a motion
- to use the general fund. Motion carried. There was additional discussion about future year’s donations. Motion made by Jim Jones to cap future contribution at $2000.00. Motion failed.
- Gregg Thompson briefed on SAL fundraisers (quilt and picture taking during Poker Run).
- Reminded membership of July 4th parade in Derby.
- Back briefed membership on providing assistance to local soldier in need. ALR and Post contributed $100.00 each as did several other local ALRs.
- Ron Vangas volunteered to head up Project Troop Care; collecting and mailing packages to our
deployed troops. A box has been set up in the Post for donations.
- Ron Vangas is obtaining information on homeless veteran funerals. This links explains the Dignity

- Advised the officers will be reviewing ALR by-laws.
- Gary Donaldson’s father has applied for the Honor Flight, which takes WWII Veterans to see the WWII Memorial in Washington DC. Legion, SAL, and Auxiliary contributed $125.00. Motion made for ALR to contribute $125.00, taking care of the balance due. Motion carried.
- Motorcycle safety and advance riding courses are available through ALR members Jerry Kirk,
George Smith, and Mike Vore. See them for specifics.
- Rick Ries created an “Invitation” card to give to potential new members. See Rick for more.
- Chuck Barshney read a letter from Commander Babinger’s son who is deployed in Iraq.
- Richard and Debbie Stich’s daughter, A1C Julie Stick, will be home on leave and come to the Post Friday night for dinner. We will take a few minutes and thank her for her service.
- Bill Logan discussed Rolling Thunder/Carry the Flame and the contributions made by Robert (Grunt), Marine Vietnam Veteran and Medicine Doctor, and his wife Josie Delsi, Flame of Freedom. Jim Jones made a motion to contribute $250.00 to Robert in support of his necklace project. Motion carried.
- Terry Houck recognized the 10 Riders who made the trip to Topeka.

Special Presentation: Meeting dedicated in honor of our own Army National Guard Specialist Trung (Charlie) Nguyen who will deploy to Afghanistan in April. Charlie led our hand salute and the Pledge of Allegiance. Terry Houck presented him with the cross he has worn since the inception of the Patriot Guard. Historian Report: Greg Bauer provided an update on February activities (4 funerals, 4 welcome homes/send offs, and 4 special events). Our historian, Mike St Clair, wasn’t feeling well.

Fundraising Committee Report: Asonjia Stewart briefed on the upcoming Pancake and Sausage Feed on March 11th and Poker Run on May 9th. We can still use additional volunteers. Committees working details.

Veteran’s Coordinator Corner:
- Terry Houck presented JD Dunham and Jerry Allen a certificate recognizing them for the years of service they have provided during our missions and great work they have done as our staging crew.
- Read Honor Flight letter and introduced Cheryl Carpenter who provided specifics on cost, itinerary, and upcoming flights. We’ll obtain names of WWII Veterans and consider sponsoring future flights.
- Briefed on March 15th VA Banana Run. Coupons provided by Nancy Johnson to purchase sugar free items. Jim Finneran advised his cadets from Curtis Middle School will again attend and help with this effort. Mulvane High School students may assist as well as Post 140, Lindsborg.
- Briefed on Flags for our Fallen Military and our commitment to place flag poles for two Kansas families (Anita Dixon mother of US Army Sgt Evan Parker and Debbie Drexler mother of US Army PFC Jeremy Drexler). Details on installing flags are being worked out.
- Read letter written to Jack “Ripper” Knowles from USAF Major Chris Ford, 314th Security Forces Squadron, thanking us for the job we do as Patriot Guard members.
- Advised that 25 bricks have been ordered for our Patriot Guard KIA and Veterans.

Commander’s Corner:
- Rick Babinger talked about the Girl Scout flag retirement on April 25th. More details to follow.
- Advised a concealed carry license class could be set up if enough interested.
- Reminded membership of 5th District Convention April 25-26 in Newton.
- Encouraged membership to run for Post Officer positions.
- Briefed on revitalized Sons of the American Legion (SAL). New commander is Gregg Thompson. SAL fundraiser (large quilt) at convention.
- Advised that fireworks sign-up sheet available and the need for lots of volunteers.

Director’s Corner:
- Doug Lehman provided updated statistics on membership - 164 members.
- Advised that Canton Party Bus is full with two on the waiting list and four driving.
- Briefed on obtaining Blue Star Flags from McConnell Air Force Base at a cost of $5.50 per flag. Motion made by Andy Webb, seconded by Nate Mesta, to purchase 20 flags and present them at send offs. Motion carried; flags will be purchased by Terri Lehman.
- Advised that Veteran Thank You cards are available. They are free and additional card can be obtained at www.dearamericanhero.com . Gary Schultz made a motion, seconded by JD Dunham, to donate $100.00 to this cause. Motion carried; Monika Barshney will make donation.
- Advised that planned “Thank You Ride” to Mulvane High School will instead be replaced by inviting students and staff to our VA Banana Run. “Thank You Ride” to Marion Western Graphics and tour of their facility will be formalized in the next month or so.
- Provided overview of items discussed at Area ALR Director/Co-Director meeting. For example, use of leg patch on chaps, homecoming follow-up, not discouraging attendance at airport homecomings, non-confrontation with PRG members. Note: Committee (Barb Giovanni, Janet Logan, Charlotte Stewart, and Terri Lehman) developing letter/card, possible dinner coupon, as follow-up option.

Co-Director Corner:
- Presented Trung (Charlie) Nguyen with our first Blue Star Flag to give to his mother.
- Greg Bauer commented on the Sons of the American Legion membership increase and the great attendance at their meeting. Total membership up to 108. SAL meeting time changed to 1:30PM.
- Advised of work detail March 22nd at 10:00AM to put up poles/chains around memorial stone area.

New Business/Discussion Items:
- Ron Herndon advised that Dan Morgan will be home soon for R & R. Keep Dan in your prayers.
- Jerry Allen recommended changing ALR challenge coins to previous style, with Post engraved on reverse side. Committee (Jerry Allen, Roger Attebury, Harold Cooper, and Terri Lehman) to come up with design to present to membership. Roger Attebury will provide free engraving. We have about 100 coins on hand at this time.
- DAV is short of drivers to take patients to VA. Volunteers needed to drive van. Additional information being obtained by Rick Babinger.
- April/May meetings slipped a week to April 19/May 17 due to Easter and Mother’s Day.
- Dennis McDonough is riding in this year’s Legacy Run.
- Terri Lehman made a motion, seconded, to earmark up to $2000.00 for the Legacy Scholarship Fund. Motion carried; Monika Barshney will obligate $2000.00.
- Ben Roloff reminded everyone to wear black at funerals, even if on a Friday.
- John Wilson asked if there was interest in an ALR du-rag and will come up with a design.
- Gary Schultz discussed homeless Veterans and their need for household items (furniture, beds, couches, tables, chairs, dishes, pans, silverware, sheets, towels, TVs, small kitchen appliances, etc). Brock Hayes (409-9825 or MayhemProductions@cox.net ) volunteered to pick up and deliver items.
