  • Advised that Art Beale’s birthday was Thursday and would be celebrated at Red Robin in Wichita. Discussion resulted in 13 December ride to Riverside Café moved to 20 December Meet at Red Robin before 6 PM on 15 December to surprise Art for his birthday.

Veteran’s Coordinator (Dennis Joynt) Corner

  • Last 136 Banana Run for the year was 4 December 2011
    • Mulvane High School Choir and Honor Society participated.

  • Presented 2 popcorn machines in conjunction with Post 10 (Winfield) prior to the Wreaths across America ceremony.

    • Must be 2012 member to vote, Membership ID’s checked at the door.

  • Thanked all who supported KVH/Wreaths Mission.
    • 24 members, 8 rode. 14 bikes total from all posts.
    • Due to all graves being covered with wreaths, the $500 Post 136 voted to donate remains in obligated monies for next year.
  • New challenge coins should be in by Wednesday, 14 December.
  • Operation Star Tree - $1133 spent on 25 stars.
    • Thanked Barb Giovanni, Connie Berry, Denny McDonough, Monica Barshney, Rick and Nancy Johnson for shopping.
  • Operation Holiday Surprise - Riders donated $600 & the Legion donated $500.
  • Welcome Home Monday, 12 December for Shawn Williams, who was wounded by an IED in Afghanistan.
  • The scholarship requirements remain unchanged from last year. Topic is “What have Veterans done for our Nation and how has it affected me personally.”
  • Summarized the Chapter Report to date.
    • 13832 hours, 146951 miles and $15,348.60 in donations, year to date.
  • Post 10 FYBO Poker Run is 14 January, 2012, starting in Winfield.

  • Warrior Transition Battalion Toys Donation request from Department. Terry Houck made a motion, seconded by John DeArmond, to donate $100. Motion Passed.
  • Terry Houck discussed the escort for the Quilts of Valor in Mid to Late March, 2012, to the Warriors Transition Battalion for the Quilt Presentation to the 4/4 Cavalry, who has a high casualty rate from the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan.
  • Director authorized $62.50 to pay for the next year’s web domain service.
  • John DeArmond questioned possibility of Lifetime ALR membership. No additional discussion at this time.
  • Post 10 Freeze Your Butt Off Poker Run is 14 January, 2012, starting in Winfield.
    • Kevin Conover discussed drawings for wooden statue and pistol during event.
  • Jerry Kirk questioned July 2012 meeting date. No confirmation at this time. Date may change based on new Directors call.
  • Discussion concerning new plans for building remodel as they relate to $5000 donation by ALR 136 to the Patio Fund. Russ Wallace, Legion Finance Officer will ensure money is designated for Patio construction only.
  • Flint McPeak requested an Airport Welcome Home for Mulvane Police Officer Friday’s son who is returning from Navy A School. Director to contact Flint to discuss.

  • Motion by Ben “Ditch” Roloff, seconded by Don Carey, to reimburse Dwayne Stewart $380 for the hats given to veterans during Veterans Appreciation Day. Motion Passed.
  • Motion by Connie “Pretzels” Berry, seconded by Ben “Ditch” Roloff, to purchase 100 Angel Pins to be given to wives or mothers during sendoffs and welcome homes. Total cost $356.24. Motion Passed.

New Business/Discussion Items:

  • Embroidered blankets to be given to patients at the VA during the 4 December Banana Run. Must be ordered no later than Monday, 14 November.
    • Dennis Scuffham advised most patients already have several blankets.
    • After considerable discussion, Jerry Kirk made motion, seconded by Bruce Simmons, to match the amount spent last year and allow the officers to determine what to purchase. Motion Failed.
  • Motion by Barb Giovanni, to purchase $10 gift certificates for canteen for VA patients unable to leave the premises, and $10 Golden Corral gift certificates for those that can, seconded by Denny McDonough. After discussion. Barb rescinded the motion.
  • Motion by Barb Giovanni, seconded by Denny McDonough, to purchase $10 canteen gift certificates for all VA patients. Motion Passed.
    • Chuck Barshney to make arrangements for gift certificates.
  • Motion by Pat Thacker, seconded by Ben Roloff, to donate $600 to Operation Holiday Surprise. Motion Passed.
  • Motion by Mark Bush, seconded by Don Carey, to add $500 to obligated money for Operation Star Tree at McConnell. Motion Passed.
    • Terri Lehman volunteered to obtain stars from tree.
    • Volunteers to help shop are Barb Giovanni, Jerry & Connie Berry, Asonjia Stewart, Denny McDonough, and Monica Barshney.
  • Jan and Greg Bauer presented a check to the membership for $500 to be added to the Operation Star Tree fund.
  • Motion by Ben Roloff, seconded by Pat Thacker, to donate 400 bottles of soda to the Big Red Turkey Run scheduled for 19 November. Motion Passed.

    • Jerry Berry and Ron to transport to Turkey Run donation collection center.
  • Sherry Evans advised Keller-Williams Realty has fundraiser to support their VA Red Day benefit 12 May, 2012. Drawing tickets available for suggested donation of $1.

  • Motion by Terri “Shirt Babe” Lehman, seconded by Terry “Darkhorse” Houck, to provide free breakfast buffet for Mulvane High School student volunteers for the 4 December Banana Run. Motion Passed.
  • Rick Babinger rescinded his motion to obligate $500 to Wreaths across America after it was pointed out we had obligated $136 at last month’s meeting. Jerry “Bowhunter” Kirk made new motion, seconded by Sherry Evans, to increase obligated money for this item from $136, by $364, to a total of $500. Motion Passed
  • Rick Babinger discussed building renovations, suggesting alternative approach to be discussed in more detail at separate meeting.
  • Jake “Lucky Dog” Defrees made a motion, seconded by Jerry “Papa J” Ward, to donate $550 to the Quilts of Valor. Motion was amended to $1000. Motion Passed.
  • Jerry “Bowhunter” Kirk read Thank You from Honor Flight participant Bill Crow.
  • Jerry “Bowhunter” Kirk suggested a group together to go to different locations to visit veterans on 11 November, Veterans Day.
  • Terry “Darkhorse” Houck advised there is a new book available called “The Wall”. It can be ordered for $10. Watch for additional info through email.
  • Reminded membership that new scholarship is available. Spread the word so we can get more than one applicant this year.

  • Jerry (Jarhead) Allen initiated discussion concerning the new T-shirt design. Presented 2 ideas. Discussion resulted in tabling issue until next meeting when Terri (Shirt Babe) Lehman will bring in a sample shirt.
New Business/Discussion Items:
  • Veteran’s Appreciation Day being planned for October.
  • Disposition of leftover Sloppy Joes from poker run. Donate to old settlers.
  • Members commented on Directors idea to present spouses of deploying/returning active duty personnel with angel pin. Well received at Eddie Bulstrodes welcome home. Members agreed to continue presenting to spouse. Cost currently is $6 each. Working on cost reduction.
  • Terri (Shirt Babe) Lehman suggested presenting Blue Star pin to parents of deploying/returning active duty personnel. Will check price and begin giving these out also.
  • Ben (Ditch) Roloff made a motion to donate $5000 to the VA, $5000 to the Kansas Veterans Home and $5000 to the patio fund. No second. Discussion resulted in motion being rescinded and committees being formed to determine actual needs at the VA and the Veterans Home.
  • Jim Lindley thanked all who participated in the funeral mission for his father.

o       Waiting for answers from email forwarded to headquarters.
o       Committee will reconvene and discuss before presenting recommendations to membership.

New Business/Discussion Items
:
·        Russ Wallace informed of members returning from deployment over the next few weeks
o       First individual 1:13 PM Tuesday, 14 June.
·        10th Anniversary Patch Issue: Director notified 1 June that patches ordered on behalf of the 10th Anniversary Committee on 11 May, and paid for with the Director’s personal credit card on 24 May, were disapproved. Informed at Legion meeting 6 June that patches were to be surrendered, without reimbursement, within 10 days or Post Charter would be pulled.
o       Director provided timeline of events from creation of 10th Anniversary Committee to date.
o       Linda Kirby provided information from her discussions by phone with National.
o       Rick Babinger provided opinion concerning our involvement with the event since it was taken over by Department without notification, the beneficiaries of any proceeds were changed without consulting the committee, and the patch was disapproved 2 weeks prior to the event even though it was submitted 2 months prior.
o       Request full disclosure of disposition of monies collected by Department from this event.
o       Dwight Miller, Director ALR 268, Sedgwick, provided additional information about the event and will suggest to all area posts they kick in to offset the loss to the Director.
o       In response to various suggestions on how to render the patches unusable before surrendering them, Doug Lehman recommended the patches be returned with no damage.
o       Linda Kirby agreed to $1.00 retainer should her legal expertise be required.
o       Director suggested Deb Lynch, ALR Post 81, be an advisor on this issue due to her experience as District Commander and with Department issues.
o       Recommendation made to surrender patches to Department and include letter of protest.
o       Ben Roloff made a motion, seconded by Terry Houck, to reimburse the Director for the cost of the patches. Passed unanimously.
o       Recommendation made that response to National should be signed by the Post Commander and the ALR Director.
o       Greg Bauer made a motion, seconded by Gary Donaldson, to support any decision of the 10th Anniversary Committee. Passed unanimously.
o       1st Vice Commander Jake Defrees, as acting Commander, stated Post 136 American Legion fully supports this event.

o        Need 5 Rifle Squad, 5 Color Guard, 3 for reading Names, and 2 for Flanders Field Poem
o        May 27, 5:30 PM – Place crosses and flags on grave sites.
o        Memorial Day - meet at the post at 5:30 AM; proceed to the cemetery to put up flags.
o        Return to the post for breakfast when finished.

o        Are there statistics available to show which states received scholarship approvals and how many by year?
o        What percentage in administrative fees/expenses is paid to administer the Legacy Scholarship Fund?
o        Is a financial statement available for our review?
o        How the money invested and what is the rate of return?
o        Do we (The American Legion) provide scholarship information to each Service branch for their Casualty Assistance Offices?
o        Where will any unused monies go if not needed in the future?
New Business/Discussion Items:
·        Donation to RCIC for Veterans welding scholarship.
o        Made $795 on items donated to Poker Run.
o        Suggested donation is $100, which pays the course costs for one veteran.
o        Motion by Jerry Ward, seconded by Rick Johnson, to donate $500. Approved.
·        Rich Hula made presentation on Camp Patriot, a program to assist disabled veterans accomplish various physically challenging endeavors.
o        Suggested donation of $500.
o        Discussion resulted in request for Rich to investigate program being developed in Kansas.
·        Dennis Scuffham thanked everyone who participated in the Keller Williams’ Red Day event at the VA.
·         Accepting orders for Memorial Bricks to be placed by Patriot Guard stone in front of the post. Contact Director for forms. Cost is $20 per brick.
