Special Guests:  Bob Ginn from Caldwell presented a laser cut Patriot Guard metal in appreciation for our service to Veterans; Madeleine Goodner and Stacey Turmell from McConnell’s Enlisted Spouses Club briefed on Operation Holiday Surprise (Dwane Stewart, Post Finance Officer, presented a check for $500.00 – ALR contribution addressed under New Business)

Veteran’s Coordinator (Ron Vangas) Corner
  • Summarized activities at the Christmas VA Banana Run
  • Discussed Certificate of Appreciation presentation to Mulvane High School Honor Society
  • Briefed about 25 members who braved the cold and attended the Wreaths Across America, lunch at Post 10, and donation of 4-37” TVs, brackets, and 3 sets of bus decals to the Winfield Veterans Home
Commander’s (Dennis Scuffham) Corner:
  • Thanked all those who support the VA
  • Reminded membership to pay 2011 dues
  • Briefed on Ladies Auxiliary fundraiser on New Year’s Day at noon (black-eyed peas & ham, chili, chicken soup, homemade breads – donations accepted)
  • Advised of Canteen Manager and bartender position openings
Sons of the American Legion (Jerry Armstrong) Corner:
  • Thanked all who supported the Kid’s Christmas party
  • Announced cleanup day January 9 – specifics later

Co-Director’s (Greg Bauer) Corner:
  • Read thank you letter from Sgt Matt Storment, currently deployed to Afghanistan (Jack Evans also thanked everyone for package sent to his nephew, Private Brenden Evans)
Director’s (Doug Lehman) Corner and Old Business:
  • Terry Houck spoke on Gold Star Mother’s plaque – pending pricing – design approved
  • Terry also discussed plaques being developed thanking our local law enforcement
  • Doug reminded everyone to pay 2011 dues in order to be eligible to vote in January
New Business/Discussion Items:
  • Director briefed on 2011 Scholarship – eligibility criteria, essay subject, and deadline
  • Announced January 16 fundraiser at Augusta High School for wounded Marine Jon Blank (auction items donated thus far:  quilt from Melinda & Dennis McDonough, quilt from Judy & Brad Modlin, necklace from Linda Thacker, birdhouse from ALR 140 (Lindsborg).  Also have some extra Veteran hats from Christmas VA Banana Run.  Next meeting at Post 406 in Andover, December 15, 6:00 PM
  • Briefed on $100.00 donation made for Christmas toys for children of the Warrior Transition Battalion
  • Discussed Christmas assistance for children of US Army Veteran Ryan Newell.  Motion made by Pat Thacker to donate $200.00.  Motion passed.
  • Addressed McConnell’s Operation Holiday Surprise.  Motion made by Ben Roloff to donate $500.00.  Motion passed.  An additional $50.00 donated by Dan Benson.
  • Explained McConnell’s Operation Star Tree.  Motion made by Pat Thacker to donate $500.00.  Motion passed.  Additional individual donations:  Greg & Jan Bauer $150.00, Brad & Judy Modlin $250.00, and Bill & Teresa Obermeier $150.00.  Grand total = $1050.00.  Gifts to be purchased by Connie & Jerry Berry, Barb Giovanni, Judy Modlin, and Dennis McDonough.

ALR 136 Newsletter - November 2010

Veteran’s Coordinator (Ron Vangas) Corner (Greg Bauer reported in Ron’s absence):
  • Christmas VA Banana Run December 5.  Post opens for breakfast at 8:30 AM, assemble decorated sacks at 11:00 AM, briefing at 11:45 AM, depart at Noon.  Sacks will contain sugar free goodies, fruit, travel cups, Veteran hats, and beanie babies.  Voices of McConnell will join us and sing Christmas Carols. 
  • Patriot Guard Highway cleanup went well – 36 participated
Commander’s (Dennis Scuffham) Corner:
  • Post Thanksgiving dinner November 22 at 6:00 PM; bring a side dish
  • SAL Kid’s Christmas Party December 5 (3:00-5:00 PM); bring kids/grand kids
  • Thanks for all the support for Veterans Programs

Director’s (Doug Lehman) Corner and Old Business:
  • By-Law change discussed at October meeting pertaining to retaining membership was presented and approved by membership
  • Big Red “1” Turkey Run November 20.  Staging details on ALR Calendar.  Reminded of Fort Riley requirements:  helmet, full-finger gloves, boots, long sleeves, registration, insurance card, and driver’s license
  • Jerry Allen provided additional information on the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.  Bruce Simmons worked with Wal-Mart for the purchase of 4-37” TVs ($375.00 each) and mounts ($25.00 each).  Jerry also advised cost of four vehicle decals would be $449.11.  Total cost including tax is $2173.91.  Donations were received from Post 136, Post 136 SAL, and Post 10; $500.00, $350.00, and $500.00 respectively.  After discussion, motion made by Ben Roloff for the ALR to pick up difference between the total cost and above donations which equates to $823.91.  Motion passed.  Individual donations by John Kaufman, Pat Stanley, and Chuck Barshney; $500.00, $100.00, and $73.00 respectively, and to be set aside as obligated money for future Kansas Veterans Home needs.  Special thanks to the committee (Jerry Allen, Phil Giovanni, Terry Houck, Rick Johnson, and Jerry Ward) for their work on this project.  Details to follow on delivery of TVs/decals
  • Nominations for 2011 Officers will be held at the December meeting.  Job descriptions for each position were provided.  2011 dues must be paid in to vote at January meeting.
  • Special quilt presentation to Ron and Sherry McMahon, parents of Fallen Hero Captain Jason McMahon, November 15.  Stage at the Post at 4:30 PM, depart at 4:55 PM.  Thanks go out to Greg and Jan Bauer for their generosity and thoughtful consideration.
New Business/Discussion Items:
  • Director advised of correct protocol and paying respect to the American Flag when exiting and entering room during meetings.  Veterans salute.  Non-Veterans hand over heart.
  • Encouraged new ideas without requiring the person to chair a committee
  • Dave Williams is taking orders for American Legion wind breakers, sweatshirts, and hoodies.  Sign-up sheet on counter by Post entrance.  Price $35.00.
  • Advised that member Matt Benson, son of Dan and Carol Benson, recently deployed to Afghanistan.  Will add to Operation Troop Care list to send a package.  Please keep Matt and the entire family in your prayers.
  • Briefed membership on seamstress being at Sgt C’s Leather next Saturday & Sunday
  • Updated membership on those ill/recuperating (Darrell & Gail Hacker, Nan Wise, Bill Willis, and Russ Sprague)
  • ALR 406 will be joining us Friday, November 19, for dinner
  • Reported that ALR 136 has 19,084 volunteer hours thus far for 2011 and traveled 227,863 miles
  • Dave Stewart addressed the membership about donating to Faith Comes by Hearing which provides bibles to deployed members via audio sticks.  Motion made by John Wilson to donate $500.  Motion passed.  Dave will check if we can send these sticks directly.
  • Rick  Babinger discussed safety concerns with trikes and spyders while group riding
  • Bill Logan gave an update on Ed Carr’s condition after his motorcycle accident
  • Karen Babinger advised of Post Board of Governor opening
  • Jerry Allen thanked all those who participated in the Wichita Toy Run

Veteran’s Coordinator (Ron Vangas) Corner:
·         Operation Troop Care packages mailed to 11 deployed/family members.  Next mailing March.
·         Christmas VA Banana Run is December 5.  Motion made by Terry Houck, seconded by Jerry Ward, to purchase 100 cups @ $1.50 each.  Motion carried.  Per last month’s meeting, hats will also be purchased @ $9.50 each.  Terri Lehman will check on other price options; then order. 
·         Patriot Guard Highway cleanup is October 31.  Details will be sent via email/ALR Calendar.
 
Commander’s (Dennis Scuffham) Corner:
·         Discussed Post Excellence Award; more information to follow 
·         Post Halloween party October 30 – dress up, have fun, and bring snack food
·         Stressed renewing membership for Legion, Auxiliary, and Sons
·         Special thanks to Dan and Carol Benson for excellent Early Bird Dinner
·         National Commander’s visit October 17.  Commander Jimmie Foster to be escorted from Marriott Hotel and should arrive at the Post by 5:15PM.  Chicken dinner at 6:00PM for $5.00.  Ladies Auxiliary will serve.  Commander departs about 7:30PM.
 
Co-Director’s (Greg Bauer) Corner:

·         Thanked membership for the outstanding participation in the McConnell Open House/Air Show and Honor Flight
·         Jerry Allen provided information on the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.  Additional research being planned and committee established:  Jerry Allen, Phil Giovanni, Terry Houck, Rick Johnson, and Jerry Ward.
·         Reminded everyone of Mulvane’s 2nd Annual Toys for Kids Poker Run, Saturday, October 16.  In addition, addressed donation.  Motion made by Pat Thacker, seconded by Rick Johnson, to donate $500.00.  Motion carried.  Post and ALR donations to be presented at the Poker Run.
·         John Wilson advised of changes to website for Operation Freedom Memorial (OFM) and ability to purchase 4TROOPS concert tickets through the website – www.ofm-ks.com .
·         Terry Houck displayed new drafts of Gold Star Mother’s plaque.  Post officers will discuss.
 
New Business/Discussion Items:
·         Proposed by-law change concerning retaining membership if motorcycle is sold due to illness or inability to ride safely.  After a lengthy discussion, decision was made to re-write the by-law change and address at the November meeting.  Director and Co-Director will revise.
·         Discussed Big Red “1” Turkey Run on Saturday, November 16.  150 turkeys provided by Troop Support Ride for our Wounded Warrior and their families.  Discussed other food items needed.  Motion made by Rick Travis, seconded by Phil Giovanni, to donate 75 cans of yams and 75 cans of cranberry sauce.  Motion carried.
·         Director reminded everyone to begin thinking about our 2011 elections.  Need new ideas/leadership for the upcoming year.
·         Jerry Allen briefed on this year’s Wichita Toy for Tots, Sunday, November 7.  Discussed past year’s practice of flying Marine Flags at the end of the procession in honor of the Marine Corps Reserve.  After discussion, membership agreed to follow this tradition.

Veteran’s Coordinator Corner:
  • Ron Vangas advised the Christmas VA Banana Run is forthcoming.  Date to be announced.  Discussed option for gifts for each patient.  24 hats were left over from last year and will be used.  Motion made to purchase additional hats with same design but different color (black).  Motion passed.  Terri Lehman will check on pricing and order accordingly.
  • Patriot Guard Highway cleanup in November.  Date to be announced.
  • Operation Troop Care packages will be sent to our deployed/family members in the next few weeks.  Donations can be dropped off at the Post or call Ron at 788-0575.  Extra $50.00 Wal-Mart gift card from Veterans Appreciation and Fun Day donated to buy items for packages.
Commander’s Corner:
  • Commander, Dennis Scuffham, announced Ladies Auxiliary steak dinner October 2 
  • Dwane & Asonjia Stewart’s received considerable damage during recent storm
  • Membership drive ongoing – no longer # 1 – get renewals in – Post/Sons/Auxiliary

  • Legacy Run figures – over $71,000 from Kansas American Legion Family – over $56,000 of that from Kansas American Legion Riders
  • Advised Tony Clark’s Run from Nebraska border to Oklahoma border raised over $31,000
  • Operation Freedom Memorial (OFM) – cost estimate $300,000 – to be located in Wichita’s Veterans Memorial Park - motion made by Jerry Kirk to donate $500.00 - motion passed
  • Fort Dodge Soldiers Home – needs 50 22-inch TVs and wall brackets for hospice unit – motion made by Dennis Scuffham to purchase one TV @ $219.90 – motion passed – Note:  Jerry Allen to research needs at Winfield Soldiers Home and will advise at a later date
  • Welcome Home and We Support Our Troops flags – supply running low – discussed purchasing a box of 100 or splitting with ALR 408 (Derby) – motion made by Pat Thacker to split with ALR 408 – motion passed

Guests:  US Air Force SSgt Kenneth Holsey, son-in-law of member Jerry Kirk, just returned from a deployment to Qatar and was presented a Welcome Home Flag and challenge coin.

Veteran’s Coordinator Corner:
 
-          Ron Vangas advised the VA Banana Run will be next Sunday, August 15.  Enjoy breakfast at the Post and then begin filling goodie sacks at 11:15AM.  Depart for VA about noon.
-          Operation Troop Care packages will be sent to our deployed/family members after the September meeting.
-          Briefed on the recent Homeless Funeral for Navy Veteran Herman Bittle; casket flag to be presented to a High School JROTC in late September – details to follow.
 
Co-Director’s Corner:
 
-          Greg Bauer read a note which accompanied a donation on behalf of the Donna Jones memorial.  Four other donations received totaling $115.00.
 
Director’s Corner and Old Business:
 
-          Briefly discussed Old Settler’s breakfast and parade.
-          Doug Lehman summarized the Honor Flight fundraiser at Prairie Rose Chuckwagon – raised $27,685 – 24 members attended and donated over $1200.

-          Advised that McConnell Air Force Base was looking for WWII Veterans to participate in the opening ceremony for the Open House on September.  If anyone is interested, inform Director.

ALR 136 Newsletter - July 2010

Meeting called to order at 3:01PM:  Total present:  73 (66 members and 7 guests)
 
Guests:  Katy Vickers and several members of the Quilts of Valor briefed the membership that 197 quilts were made from Greg (Ebay) Hansen memorial funds.  Those funds have now been depleted.  486 quilts have been made over the past four years and presented to Wounded Warriors.  Additional funds are needed.  The discussion of any donation was addressed under New Business.
 
Melinda McDonough, wife of ALR 136 member, Dennis McDonough, donated a beautiful quilt to the ALR in appreciation for our attendance at a family member’s funeral and to raise money and continue our cause.  We will find an appropriate time to auction the quilt during a future fundraiser.  Our thanks go out to Melinda and Dennis and their family for their generous contribution.
 
Betty Jean Pulliam, Gold Star Mother, thanked all those who were present at the Honor and Remember Flag Ceremony at Fort Leavenworth.  Betty displayed the flag and explained each color’s meaning.

·    August Legion meeting moved to Monday, August 9, at 7:00PM.
 
Co-Director’s Corner:

·    Greg Bauer read a thank you card from Kaye Watkins (VA) for ALR member Don Carey’s bicycle donation for the homeless.  Letter received from the Honor Flight thanking us for our $500.00 donation to sponsor Benjamin Brooks.  Shanda Vangas donated $40.00 to the ALR on behalf of her father, Ron Vangas.

Director’s Corner and Old Business:
 
·    Sherry Evans briefed the membership on our support of the Gold Star Families’ float for the Wichita Veterans Day parade.  Dan Benson volunteered his truck and trailer.  Rick Babinger advised the Post has a Soldiers Cross that can be used on the float.  Charlie Nguyen volunteered to be in uniform and guard the Soldiers Cross.  Skirting, banners, flags, etc, being worked.  Motion made to obligate up to $100.00 for costs.  Motion carried.
·    Doug Lehman reminded everyone of the 2nd Annual Rip’s Bikers against Diabetes Ride, Saturday, July 31.  One of the stops is our Post.
·    Advised the car flags orders were cancelled due to not enough orders being received.
·    Clarified the difference between donations to the Legacy Run and Legacy Fund.
·    Reminded membership of our donation of $350.00 to Lynn Murch, Wounded Warrior.
 
New Business/Discussion Items:
 
·    Discussed Quilts of Valor’s (QOV) need for additional funds.  Motion made to donate $550.00 to QOV.  Motion carried.  Additionally, ALR members Jim Finneran and Dan Vickers donated $100.00 each.  Total donation of $750.00 will be presented to the QOV at our Veterans Appreciation Day on September 11.
·    Solicited discussion about the possibility of hosting the 2013 ALR State Rally.  Obstacles addresses:  insufficient room for approximately 200 Riders, shower facilities, hotels.  Open.
·    Briefed membership on Prairie Rose Chuckwagon/Kansas Cowboys WWII Veterans benefit Saturday, July 31, to raise money for the Wichita Honor Flight.  Consensus was to support this effort by our attendance.  Email will be sent to obtain list of those interested.
·    Advised that Asonjia Stewart will head up our planning for Veterans Appreciation Day.  Initial planning meeting date pending.  Discussed ALR covering costs.  Motion made to cover all costs of food, soda, and water.  These items will be free to all attendees.  Volunteers obtained for committees:  food- Monika Barshney, Barb Giovanni, Terri Lehman, and Ben Roloff; games-Dan and Carol Benson; horseshoes-Greg Bauer and Doug Lehman.  Tom Stoy (Winfield) donated 120 hotdogs, polish sausages, and hamburgers.
·    Provided information about the McConnell Open House/Air Show on Saturday/Sunday, September 25/26.  ALR will do a high-speed (about 35-40mph) and low-speed pass down the runway by the spectators with flags on bikes.  Solicited volunteers to proceed with planning.  Greg Bauer, Doug Lehman, Ed Watson, and John Wise volunteered.  More details to follow.
·     Rick Babinger advised SAL will do a Post clean-up on Sunday, August 8, 1:30PM and periodically as needed.  Connie Berry invited Ladies Auxiliary to help.

Karen Funcheon, Gold Star Mother, addressed the membership and requested support for the Gold Star Families participation in the Wichita Veterans Day Parade. Committee formed to meet and discuss. Committee members: Dan Benson, Sherry Evans, Darrell Hacker, Rick and Nancy Johnson, Brad and Judy Modlin, and Charlie Nguyen.

New Members: Alfred Decaire, Darrell Hacker, Matt Kreidler, and Frank Ritter

- 2nd Annual Rip’s Bikers Diabetes Ride, July 31 – Barb Giovanni and Diana Nelson volunteered to work at our Post
- Discussed Honor Flight. Terri Lehman made a motion to sponsor Benjamin Brooks, father of Melani Claude. Motion carried. $500 to be sent to the Honor Flight.
- Re-addressed previously obligated monies (up to $1000) to Legacy Scholarship Fund and briefed on HR Bill 2345 Education for Children of Fallen and Marine Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship. After discussion, Ben Roloff made a motion to donate the $1000 to this year’s Legacy Run and review impact of other initiatives in 2011. Motion carried.

New Business/Discussion Items:
- Doug Lehman briefed on vandalism at Peabody cemetery and ALR 256 replacement of 10 flags
- Discussed request from ALR 256 to assist the town of Cassoday in obtaining a flag and flag pole. John Wilson advised the Veterans Memorial Park of Wichita, Inc (VMPWI) had already donated the pole.
- Talked about ALR 4 member, Star Northern’s, wife of Bill (Bones) Northern, need for a liver transplant and our assisting with expenses. Pat Thacker made a motion to donate $300. Motion carried.
- Thanked members John Wise, Charlie Nguyen, and Dennis McDonough for volunteering during Bikers Edge Birthday Celebration.

- Briefed on Re-Creation, a patriotic singing group, to perform at the VA May 13; about 12 riders needed to escort patients from TLC to the auditorium
- Poker Run plans were summarized - setup Friday night after dinner – Jerry Berry asked that all pendant tickets/money be turned in Friday night
- 2nd Annual Rip’s Bikers Diabetes Ride, July 31 – looking for two volunteers to work at our Post
- Terry Houck briefed our previously agreed upon hosting of Patriot Warriors Robert and Josie Delsi, additional riders, and Gold Star Mothers. Motion made to cover cost of dinner for entire party, approximately 12-14. Motion carried. Pat Thacker will have a Marine Flag to be presented at dinner Friday, May 14.

- Terry Houck discussed Patriot Guard donation from Major General Tod M. Bunting, The Adjutant General of Kansas
- Terry Houck highlighted the contributions of Richard and Joyce Woods; motion made to donate $200.00 to help offset their costs supporting ALR events – motion carried
- Director briefed on US Marine Veteran Tony Clark’s run from the Nebraska/Kansas border to Oklahoma/Kansas border on Saturday, September 11, to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. We’ve been asked to provide escort on a portion of his trip. Details to follow.
- Director discussed “Your Area Weekly News & Shopper” newspaper and their placing our Poker Run flyer in the paper at no charge. Newspaper distributed to businesses in eight area towns. Motion made to donate $300.00 to cover flyer and future ALR pictures/articles. Motion carried.
- Director recommended we consider purchasing a camera for our Historian. Charlie Nguyen donated a camera. Thank you Charlie!
- Director advised of Department approval for a new ALR 136 hat design; pending National approval
- Bill Johnson asked for those not going to ALR 129 (Lyons) 1st Annual Hog Roast to try and support ALR 414 (Kingman) for their 2nd Annual Wounded Warrior Project Poker Run on May 15. Details on ALR calendar.
