ALR 136 Newsletter - February 2011


Meeting called to order at 3:01PM:  Total present:  75 (72 members and 3 guests)

Swearing in of Dennis Joynt as Veterans Affairs Coordinator

New Members:  Jon and Jean Shane

Minutes:  No corrections or additions to January minutes

Financial Report:  Diana Nelson read the financial report; accepted as written.

Veteran’s Coordinator (Dennis Joynt) Corner
  • Briefed on shipments for Operation Troop Care (donations can be dropped off at the Post)
  • Next Banana Run is 27 March, 2011
  • Instructed on requirements for prequalification of placement at Kansas Veterans Cemetery.
  • Thanked all for cards and prayers for his mother

Commander’s (Dennis Scuffham) Corner:
  • Informed members about upcoming post elections, nominations in March, elections in April
  • Reported on Mid Winter Forum items.
  • Advised we may need a Public Affairs rep for our legion due to number of members

Co-Director’s (Ron Vangas) Corner:
  • Read thank you cards from Margie Hudson who gave a $20 donation to the Riders and Clarice Wenke who gave $25 to the Patriot Guard.

Fundraising Chairperson (Asonjia Stewart)
  • Pancake and Sausage Feed – March 19

S.A.L Commander’s (Jerry Armstrong) Corner
  • Advised a card was circulating for Don and Pat Culver on the passing of both of Don’s parents

Ladies Auxiliary (Carol Benson)
  • Mardi Gras fundraiser – March 5 – details to follow

Director’s (Jerry Berry) Corner and Old Business
  • Reminder that volunteers needed to work the Chill booth 26 & 27 February. Email availability to Jerry.
  • Reminded the ALR Scholarship application deadline is March 1. See website for details.
  • Briefed on ALR information from Mid Winter Forum – Currently 72 Chapters w/3139 members (471 new), raised $377,454.77 in 308,202 volunteer hours.
  • Advised first meeting for the Poker Run is Friday, 11 February, after dinner in the dining room.
  • Advised this year’s State Rally is 23 – 25 September @ Post 256.
  • Craig Samp from Post 81 (El Dorado) is looking for ideas on some way to honor Julie Clements (Anderson), a former reporter for the Derby Reporter, who has covered many stories about the American Legion Riders and Kansas Patriot Guard. She has breast cancer and has been undergoing chemotherapy.
  • Rick Babinger requested max attendance at the Legion Meeting on 7 February for discussion of ongoing bldg expansion. Greg Bauer thanked for help with architectural input.

New Business/Discussion Items:
  • Presentation to the Patriot Guard on behalf of LTC Paul Miller (Ret) of $50 by Betty Jean Pulliam to Terry (Darkhorse) Houck.
  • Pat (Groundpounder) Thacker donated $300 to the Patriot Guard.
  • Darkhorse reminded new members to read the Patriot Guard Mission Statement at www.patriotguardks.org
  • Darkhorse made a presentation to Commander Scuffham of the Sedgwick County Commissioners "2010 Chaisman's Award" to the American Legion Riders and Kansas Patriot Guard, since it will be displayed at AL 136 before rotating through area posts.
  • Darkhorse and Greg (Wild Thing) Bauer presented past Director Doug (Grey Eagle) Lehman with a plaque for his previous 2 years of outstanding leadership on behalf of the membership.
  • Darkhorse and Wild Thing also presented Doug and Terri (Shirt Babe) Lehman, our ALR Secretary, with a gift certificate to Ultra Modern Pool and Patio.
  • Commander Scuffham made a motion to donate a paver from the ALR to the Operation Freedom Memorial (OFP), and will bring the matter up at the Legion meeting. Suggested each group donate $50 to purchase one paver for a total of $200. Motion was tabled until all groups could discuss individually. Will be readdressed at next meeting under old business.

50/50:  Collected $137.00 - half ($68.50) won by Barb Giovanni

Motion to adjourn by Steve Coberly and Seconded by Rick Johnson.

Dwane Stewart requested the meeting be reopened for one additional item. Requesting all groups to consider giving 10% of fund raising receipts for events held in the dining room to offset costs for utilities and other operating expenses. Idea tabled until input from Legion, SAL and Aux meetings is obtained.
