ALR-136 Newsletter - May 2007

New Members: Gary Woody, Jerrit Curtis, Carline Long, Roger Thomas. Welcome to ALR 136 your membership will never be taken for granted.

Donations: Patriot Guard-$100.00 from patriotic citizen- donated back to Canton/Hillsboro and local ALR for Flags. $288.00 from Canton for PG % of hat sales. ALR: $672.00 from ALR 81(Eldorado) for phone cards. $136.00 from George Brown patriotic citizen.

New ALR Chapters: Hiawatha ALR 66, Concordia ALR 76, Clay Center 101, Louisburg ALR 250. Congrats to all of our new ALR Posts!

ALR Ms Team: Our ALR Team raised $1247.00. Way to go guys and gals!

Kansas Patriot Guard received Organization of the Year award from Mid-Kansas Community Action-People helping people. All that we do to help our Veterans and the community shows people that we truly care.

New Canteen Mgr: Our new canteen manager is Seth Decker. He brings a great deal of experience in restaurant operation and management. Please take time to welcome Seth when you see him at the Post.

Run for the Wall: Folks up in Salina need donations to help with food when Riders pull into Salina. Motion was made to donate $50.00 to send to help with food costs.

Challenge Coins: Cregg Hansen will be ordering coins this week. Post 136 has ordered 300.

ALR NEW SHED: Membership voted to spend $1500.00 for a storage shed to be used for store ALR and Patriot Guard flags.

Message from Post Commander: May 12th next Saturday help will be needed at Mulvane cemetery to locate flag pole holes, clean out grass and re-mark for Memorial Day Ceremonies. He is asking people to meet at cemetery at 9:00am. The more people that show up the shorter the work detail will last. Only 4 people showed up last year so please come out and give us a hand. Also people will be needed for Rifle Squad and Flag Bearer Detail. See Rick Babinger to volunteer.

TAG: Legion member and Army Natl. Guardsman Tom Buskirk spoke to us about a project that was assigned to him by The Adjutant General of Kansas Gen. Bunting. He really likes the ALR and wants to put on an ALR Appreciation Day. We will be putting a program together for a date sometime in Sept. More to come at later Date.

    May 20th El Reno Okla. VFW. Rolling Thunder Across America ”Operation Carry The Flame 2007”. Riders will arrive between 12-1pm. See state calendar for info. Contact Rev if you would like to RC trip there for Torch ceremony.
    May 28th Memorial Day ALR asked to be present with Flags on Bikes and to line drive in cemetery around speaker podium. Details to follow.
    June 2nd Beaumont Water Festival Our State Chairman Cregg Hansen has been asked to speak again this year and Legion Post 180 will be providing the Color Guard. We will stage at QT at K-15 and 71stin Derby at 8:00am and AIS at 8:15. It is a great ride over to Beaumont and always a good time.
    July 14-15 McConnell Air show. Anyone planning to attend this event must have info to Bill Foster by July 2nd. If you gave info for Gen. McIlhenny sendoff you are covered.Also need to know which day you will attend and if you will be parking on static line display. Static line parking is committing to being there all day from 10:00-5pm. If not you will park off base after fly-by down main runway and shuttled back on to the base,but you can leave anytime you want. ALR-136 Newsletter - April 2007

New Members: Inge Wood, Gayle Hablitzel, Dennis McDonoug. Welcome to ALR 136 your membership will never be taken for granted.

Donations: $100.00 to ALR from Steve Towns, $100.00 to ALR from Clara Shockley Special Guest: Betty Jean Pulliam, President of Natl. Gold Star Mothers spoke to riders about 25 year memorial to Vietnam Wall. Their group will be having national convention for all Gold Star Mothers in Wichita in June. We will be asked to provide Color Guard for them when they get here, more on that at future date. ALR took out $100.00 full page ad in convention booklet; PGR also took out full page ad. Greg Bauer gave Betty $100.00 for full page memorial to her son who died in Vietnam. Doc Herndon also gave Betty $100.00 for her booklet, and Farrell Belt gave Betty $20.00 to cover picture cost of her son in booklet. Papa Barshney passed the hat and another $187.00 was given to Betty for the cause. Outstanding Riders!

BIG THANKS: Ron Brengman for all donations he picked up, Terri Lehman for taking on all food and party décor planning and execution. Also to everyone who worked in kitchen and out front with Auction. This year we made $1400.00 over last year. Great effort.

MS WALK: We have 12 members for this event. It will be held April 14th. ALR donated $100.00 to this cause.

Patches & Rockers: Doug Lehman read committee report which stated no by-laws would change and only ALR members would be allowed to wear Patches or Rockers. Voted on and passed.

Post Commander Rick Babinger reminded all Legionnaires that Post elections are to be held April 3ed at General meeting. Also April 14th Post 136 is having our annual Rib feed. If you haven’t been-You ain’t been anywhere. Killer Chow!

ALR VETS ASSISTANCE FUND: Your fund was used last week to assist wife of wounded soldier who lives in Derby. With the OK from 3 Board members we gave her $250.00 and phone cards. $2000.00 was added to fund by majority vote.

Roy Mansch Memorial: Charlie Honn informed us that his relative that passed away asked that money collected from his memorial be sent to ALR. Thanks Roy you will always ride with us where ever our journey takes us!

American Legion Legacy Fund ALR earmarked $1000.00 for this year donation.

V.A. Van Post 136 Ladies Aux requested help to purchase van to pick up Wichita Vets who are handicapped. ALR has set aside $1000.00 towards this project.

Post Building Fund: Alr has donated $700.00 from our auction.

Canteen: Alice Foster asked Riders if we would purchase Hot Dog Steamer for bar area. Members voted to buy new machine.

Fire: Caused major loss to Post 400. Chaplain Herb Seel $100.00 donation will be sent.

Thank You: Becky Hansen for taking over Hospitality duty for our Riders.

Ladies Aux. Fundraiser: This Friday at dinner and again at Sunday breakfast. Baked goods and crafts will be on sale to help our Aux. ladies with their projects. Please support the cause!

Bricks: Ruben and Diane Gonzales have passed our Brick detail over to Terry Houck and a crew of volunteers. Rueben and Diane have both had surgery this past winter and have been on the mend . We thank them both for all their hard work on this project and look forward to seeing them ride with us all real soon.

Patriot Guard: Terry Houck spoke about proper placement of Patriot Guard patch, it was voted to continue to wear patch on upper right side of vest above name patch.

Shirts: Terri “Shirt Babe“ Lehman said it’s time to order short sleeve shirts.

ALR Windshield Sticker: Vickie Jones has these for sale. Static cling like PGR stickers. Cost 8.00

Mid-Winter Forum: very positive for the Kansas ALR. Dept. ALR Cmt. / Area Directors meeting following morning session was very positive as well.

Note: every week a ALR State Wide Calendar will be emailed by ALR Dept. Cmt. Sec. Deb (Giggles) Steele to your Director/Officers that will in turn get the word out to the ALR 136 membership re: upcoming ALR State Wide events of the 39 ALR Chapters, total Kansas ALR membership 1573. ALR 136 membership 205. “ Thanks For What You Do ‘ without the dedication of each of you the Kansas ALR could not accomplish our mission and purpose. Whether you participate actively or through your membership support or both is the reason we have the full support of our Military and the communities in which we live.

400,000 Americans suffer from Multiple Sclerosis: one of our own (Becky Hansen) wife of Bronco 6 has this disease. Last year the Kansas ALR raised over $1600 to help fight MS through donations for the annual MS Walk. If you would like to be part of the team to walk 3 miles on April 14th at Sedgwick County Park in Wichita contact Cregg (Bronco 6) at 316-788-4205 or email cphans@sbcglobal.net . You will receive a sponsorship packet. If you would like to donate to our team send check payable MS Society – P.O. Box 518, Derby, Ks 67037, will apply your donations to the Kansas ALR Team. Call tree established by your Director / Co-Director for our non-email members (Good Job) for those with-mail- check it regularly as many events/rides occur between monthly meetings.

5th District Chili Challenge held Feb 10th at ALR 4: ALR 136 won 1st place in the Chili Cook Off and 1st place for the display ! “ Thanks to (Doc) Herndon’s Chili and team members: (Rev) Jones, Greg Bauer and (Grey Eagle) Lehman and all the 136 members that participated.

Good of the order: Vickie Jones and Doc Herndon spend mucho bucks each week in the machine at Post 136 obtaining stuffed animals that are donated weekly to the Kansas Human Society on be-half of ALR 136. “ Thanks “, we know the puppies enjoy our contributions.

ALR 136 member: Msgt Steven (Bull) Albers will be deploying on his 3rd tour of duty to Iraq in April with the 127th ARS / 184th ARW from McConnell AFB. “ Gods Speed Bull “ and Thanks from all your ALR Brothers and Sisters !

*Feb.20th (Tuesday) Special recognition for the Kansas ALR /Patriot Guard at the Wichita Thunder (Hockey) game – meet at Coliseum 6:15 PM (I-135 / 77th St. exit) tickets $10 RSVP Rev at 316-721-7705 or topshot@swbell.net , there will be a military memorial honoring over 3000 that have been KIA in Operation Enduring Freedom.

*March 3rd (Sat) LTC Mike (Dogboy) Hall retirement Ceremony , Dogboy, Rachel and Chris will be returning to their Home State of Virginia, Dogboy will be teaching ROTC , where he will have the opportunity to help shape the minds of our future Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. YOU are invited to his retirement Ceremony Saturday March 3rd , 3:00 PM at hangar 50 (west side of McConnell AFB) if you do not have a military ID contact Msgt. Twonett Alexander at Twonett.Alexander@ksmcco.ang.af.mil , she will need your name, birthday, DL # and SS#. This info will be confidential. Non-Military IDs arrive at 2-2:15 PM (4 wheelers only)

3 New Kansas ALR Chapters: Kansas ALR has added ALR 106 (Larned) , ALR 401 (Wichita) , ALR 366 (Hillsboro) to our growing family of Kansas ALR Chapters. There are currently 39 Chapters in Kansas serving the American Veteran and supporting the largest Veterans Organization in the world , the American Legion. These Chapters are excited to be apart of the growing Kansas ALR and look forward to participating in our Mission and Purpose.

National Legion Commendations awarded at Jan. meeting: to Kansas Patriot Guard Web-Mistress Maria Dahlquist (www.kspatriotguard.org) who designed and maintains the Patriot Guard Web Site. To ALR members, Doc Herndon, JD Dunham, Jim Stephens. You have demonstrated service before self. On-behalf of the Kansas ALR “Thank You”

For his selfless service to his Country, American Legion Riders, Patriot Guard and the Community in which he lives: decorated Vietnam Vet Terry (Darkhorse) Houck was presented by the ALR 136 membership (through personal donations) a “ Purple Heart “ Derby Cover for his Iron Horse. One small token of our appreciation, we are proud to call him our friend.

LTC Mike (Dogboy) Hall is retiring from the ANG in March , Dogboy, Rachel and Chris will be returning to their Home State of Virginia, Dogboy will be teaching ROTC, where he will have the opportunity to help shape the minds of our future Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. We wish the Hall family the best Life has to offer- they will be missed.

ALR 136 membership voted to establish a “Active Duty Assistance Fund” to assist our active duty personnel for needs that may arise for the family when deployment may cause a disruption in pay for the Soldiers family. $500 was earmarked for this fund. ALR 136 will be able to work hand in hand with our Post / Department and other Kansas ALR Chapters. Funds will only be dispersed by the vote of at least 3 ALR 136 elected Officers.

Patriot Guard named “ Kansans of the Year” 2006, by the Topeka Journal. Congrats to YOU ALL for what you have done to support the Patriot Guard Mission (Honoring our KIAs)

ALR 136 member and Derby City Council member Jim (Dinger) Meidinger was very instrumental in the re- naming of 63rd South in Derby to “Patriot Ave” Thank Dinger for his efforts.

ALR-136 Newsletter - December 2006

Welcome Aboard new member(s): Dan R. Thompson, Phil Baldwin (transferred from ALR 192), Jim Daily, Randy Collett, John DeArmond, Jack Knowels, and Kayla Smith. Welcome aboard to American Legion Riders 136, your membership in the ALR will never be taken for granted. It’s an honor to have you as new member of the American Legion Riders 136.

New ALR Officers: Our new ALR Officers are: Jim Jones- Director, Doug Lehman- Co-Director, Monika Barshney-Secetary/ Treasurer, Charlie Hon-Sgt.-at-Arms, Gary Schultz-Co-Sgt.-at-Arms, Ron Herndon- Chaplin, Mike Hall-Co. Chaplin and Alice Foster- Historian. Congratulations to all and let’s make it a good new year.

Donations to the American Legion Riders and/or Patriot Guard: ALR 136 member Ron Dunlap’s family donated $100.00 for phone cards. Goddard Women’s Club $25.00. Lori Carpenter donated $100.00 to the Patriot Guard. The cake decorating contest held at the post on Sunday November 12th raised $1548.25; all of this money is to go for phone cards for our troops over seas. ALR 370 Overlandpark donated $46.00 for phone cards and $97.50 from the Memorial Stone dedication was given to the ALR to be used for phone cards. Becky Garcia donated $100.00 for phone cards.

ALR 136 Donations: We are going to donate $500.00 to the Angel Tree at McConnell AFB to help out the children of the service members stationed at McConnell. Greg Bauer also donated $500.00 to the Angel Tree at McConnell AFB.

Awards: Julie Anderson, a reporter for the Daily Reporter in Derby was given a Certificate of Appreciation from the National American Legion; to thank her for great news coverage she has given the ALR and the Patriot Guard. Certificates of Commendation from the National American Legion were given to several members who attended Patriot Guard missions. For all he has done for the ALR, Greg Bauer received a life time paid membership for the American Legion Riders.

New Kansas ALR Chapter(s): There are two new Kansas ALR chapters, Hays 173 and Medicine Lodge 69. Welcome to our ever growing family it is great to have ya’ll aboard!

Challenge Coins: The new American Legion Riders challenge coins are now available. The coins have our patch on one side and the other side says American Legion Riders. The cost is $6.00 a coin.

ALR Calendars: The ALR calendars are on sale now. We have 20 on hand and can take orders for more. These calendars will only be on sale through the next ALR meeting. The cost is $10.00 and all profits go back to the ALR. Please let me know if you want one, you can e-mail me or call me at 260-0999. (Diane Gonzales)

Patriot Guard News: We have only had one Patriot Guard mission since our last meeting. Thank goodness for that. We received several wonderful thank-you cards from the folks in Harper and a thank-you card from Mrs. Ann Mock.

Sick Call: Up date just to let everyone know Liz Burke is out of the hospital and is home. She is doing extremely well. Tim Burke is doing well; he’s back at work and helping Liz get better. Liz was well enough to attend the ALR meeting.

Cripple Creek: Cripple Creek, Co. will no longer be hosting the Veterans Rally. This year the rally will be moving to Winter Park, Co. Our connection in Colorado has already found lodging for the ALR. A whole lodge has been reserved for the ALR and the rooms will be $50.00 to $59.00 a night. There will be more information on the rally to follow.

Rides and Events for December/January

Dec. 17th: Christmas Party at the VA. This year instead of just dropping off the gifts to the Vets, we are going to have a Christmas party. There will be caroling and maybe a surprise visit from St. Nick. Meet at Post 136 at 11:30am (or come early for breakfast), AIS 12:30pm. We will be on bikes weather permitting.

Dec. 20th: Homecoming for 1st Sgt. Gregory Kober; who is deployed to Afghanistan and will be home for leave. His wife would like us to surprise him at the Wichita Airport. More details to follow as we get them.

Dec. 28th: Homecoming for a Marine just back from Iraq. The city of Rosehill is putting on this homecoming and we have been invited. The homecoming is at the Commons Bldg. in Rosehill, Ks. from 7:00pm to 8:00pm.

Dec. 30th: Wounded Knee (Tradewinds at Hydraulic and Wassell) Come for Scuffle Board and fun with your ALR friends.

Dec 31: Post 136 News Years Party, last year’s party was a great success; let’s see if we can out do it this year. There will D.J.’s to keep the music going and after midnight there will be a New Years breakfast. Everyone is welcome to come on down and party in the New Year with our Legion brothers and sisters! The party starts at 8:00 pm and will go until the last person leaves!!!

Jan. 1st: What you do today, you will do all year, So let’s RIDE! Black-eyed Peas Feed; Derby VFW 12:00 noon, meet post 136 at 11:00am-AIS 11:30am. Let’s keep the party rolling and start the New Year with good luck and good friends!!!

Jan 14th: ALR meeting at 3:00pm

Tuesday night rides: Come, meet and greet your ALR Brothers and Sisters every Tuesday night for a great ride and good food. Meet at Post 136 at 1800 hrs. All riders need to be ready to ride at 1900 hrs.

ALR-136 Newsletter - November 2006

Welcome Aboard new member(s): Richard Stich, Rebbecca Stich, Brendle Dillman, John Lane, and J. Ball. Welcome aboard to American Legion Riders 136, your membership in the ALR will never be taken for granted. It’s an honor to have you as new member of the American Legion Riders 136.

Tim and Liz Burke had an accident on their way to the parade on Saturday. Tim is doing ok, he has stitches on his head and some really sore ribs but he is up and getting around. Liz had to have surgery to relieve bleeding in her brain and she will be having surgery on her elbow. I went to visit Liz yesterday and she is doing extremely well. Condolence: Our thoughts and prayers go to David Pipen; he lost his wife Karen November 11, 2006 to heart disease. The services are tentatively scheduled for 3:00 P. M Thursday, November 16, 2006 at Resthaven Mortuary. More information to follow in later e-mails.

Donations to the American Legion Riders and/or Patriot Guard: Mike Harryman $100.00, Mike Saindon $26.00, Jim Tull $1.00, Harold Stones $2.00 and Steve Towns $15.00 all these folks made donations to the American Legion Riders. Pastor Bruce Gass of Harper made a $100.00 donation to the Patriot Guard and Terry Houck also received $225.00 in donations after the funeral of Sgt. Willsun Mock. Lorie Carpenter donated $100.00 to the Patriot Guard.

ALR 136 Donations: $1,100.00 to the VA to help purchase a new van. $100.00 to the Kansas State Vietnam Memorial in Junction City, Kansas. $200.00 to post 192 in Canton, Kansas. There has been $865.00 raised for the Marine 3/2 Christmas Chapters. $140.00 donated to the Quilts of Valor

Congratulation: To all Kansas ALR’s and Patriot Guard who rode in the Veterans Day Parade in Wichita on Saturday, we won first place in the judging for best entry.(Way to GO everyone) . General MacIlhany accepted the award on behalf of all the ALR’s riding in the parade. The trophy is at Post 4 for a month and then will spend a month at each post that participated in the parade.

Pen Pals: Mike, Kathy, and Mindy Saindon have requested our help this Christmas and through out the year. Mindy has sent a list of soldiers who are not receiving any mail and would love to hear from some of us. Please help out and select one or two of these brave soldiers and send them a Christmas card and a short letter. The list will be attached to the news letter. Please let Monika know when you are ready to send your cards and letters, we would like to send a phone card to each soldier

Help Needed: The home of a soldier from Chapman, Kansas now stationed in Iraq has burned down. Sgt. Robert Waters, wife Mary and their 2 children now living in a 2 bedroom mobile home and they really could use our help. All donations can be sent to Robert Waters, 400 East 6th Lot 8, Chapman, Kansas 67431, or you can call Cheryle Conard at 785-922-7110 for more information. Post 136 ALR has donated $100.00 to the Waters family.

FYI: The cake decorating contest was a great success, there were 30 cakes entered and $1288.00 was raised for phone cards. Thanks to Rocking Rick from KFDI and our own Bill and Alice Foster, great job.

Reminder: Post 256, all the tickets and money for the ALR Stones need to be in by November 16th, all the money raised will go to buy gifts for the American Legion Children’s Home. The Post is also having a Sloppy Joe feed – all you can eat on the 18th of November at 1:00 pm, all the money raised at the feed will go for phone cards. The winning tickets for ALR stones will be drawn at 2:00 pm. Post 136 ALR is donating $200.00 to help buy gifts for the kids at the children’s home in Ponca City.

Patriot Guard News: The Kansas Patriot Guard has attended 7 soldiers’ funerals since the 15th of October. Thanks to everyone. Jerry Armstrong (Saw blade) is now making cases for the casket flags that are presented to the families of the fallen soldiers; he is also making cases for all the flags that the ALR has received, thanks Jerry. Mike Alley, an American Legion member has donated an 8x8 shed to the Patriot Guard/ALR, to be used for flag storage. Thanks, Mike.

Nov. 14th: Homecoming for U.S. Army Ranger Spec. Jay Erwin ( this soldier was wounded in Iraq and will be returning to Walter Reed in a few days) Meet at Post 136 at 5:30pm AIS 6:00pm, will ride to Post 4 and join other riders before going to Spec. Erwin’s home. FLAGS ON BIKES WHEN WE GET TO POST 4. After homecoming we will return to Derby for supper at Busters.

Nov. 16th: Homecoming for MSGT Robert Richard, meet at Post 136 at 5:30 pm AIS 6:00 pm arrive at 6:30 pm. Flags on bikes

Nov 18th: Homecoming for Spec. Neil Rupert Derby area stage at 71st and south K-15 at 10:30am AIS 11:00am will meet Wichita riders at Maize Rd. and Kellogg QT. FLAGS ON BIKES

Nov 18th: Poker Run for Kansas Vietnam Memorial in Junction City, Kansas; registration at 10:30 am, First bike out at 1:00 pm. First Hand $10.00- Additional Hands $5.00. Registration at City Cycle Sales in Junction City, Kansas.

Nov 18th: Reno County Toy Run in Hutchinson-line up in Carey Park at the parking lot of Hobart Detter field at 12:00 noon . Parade starts at 1:00 pm. Toy drop off, chili feed, auction and door prizes inside Eaton Activity Center, 3201 East 4th Street.

Nov 25th: McPherson Toy Run sponsored by Kansas ALR –ALR will lead the Parade. Stage at Walmart on the east side of town on Hwy. 56 at 12:00pm the parade starts at 1:00pm.

Dec. 7th: 65th Anniversary Tribute to the Day of Infamy, Robert J. Doles VA Medical Center 5500 E. Kellogg Wichita, main auditorium. Seating starts at 10:30 am program starts at 10:55. Please come for a day of Tribute to our Pearl Harbor survivors and their families.

Dec10th: ALR Meeting, meeting starts at 4: P.M. Please try to attend, the membership will be voting on new officers for the year 2007.
