Veteran’s Coordinator (Duane Kalous):

  • VA to host more meetings for the veterans to voice their issues, dates TBD
  • Motion by Susan Lee, 2nd by Rob Brown to give the VA patients 2 pairs of socks plus 2-$5.00 coupon books for our Christmas gifts. Motion passed unanimously. Gifts will be delivered to patients at Banana Run - December 7- fill sacks at Post- depart at 12:25PM

Legion Commander (John Metz):

  • Board of Governor position open, can be a Legion, SAL, or Aux - voting will be November 1
  • Have now received our non-profit status back as of May 2014
  • Received a rebate on our insurance $900+; dropped the insurance on the 3 out buildings
  • Car Rally Sunday, October 19 - Post will serve breakfast for the group starting at 9:00AM
  • Reminder to pay your Legion Dues

  • Children’s Christmas party is set for Saturday, December 13 (1-4:00PM), will shop for gifts December 10, 7:00PM at Derby Walmart

Ladies Auxiliary President (Jackie Johnson):

  • Deb Herndon reported for the Auxiliary - Celebration of Service Banquet to be November 11 6:00PM - Auxiliary providing meat and potatoes, ask others to bring side dish and desserts. Deb requested veterans submit service photos to be copied for the banquet

Fundraising Chairperson (Diana Nelson):

  • Diana & Monika to cook German Meal – Saturday, October 19, 5-7:00PM - donation of $8.00. Auxiliary providing desserts for sale by single piece or whole pie, cake, etc.

Patriot Guard & Road Captain (Darkhorse):

  • Reported top rocker was brought up at the State Rally and motion made to go to one patch. After discussion, this was tabled until the next State Rally, motion to table passed 33-5

Old Business:

  • Shirt committee made decision on shirts - 5 colors - Motion by Buz Nye, 2nd by Jerry Kirk to have shirts with pockets - vote 31 no pockets, 15 with pockets. Motion failed
  • Doug reported on State Rally. Motion by Ron Vangas & 2nd by Phil Giovanni to donate $100 to Dodge City Chapter to help with State Rally expenses. Motion passed unanimously
  • Mulvane Veteran Memorial - Ron Vangas reported is to meet with KDOT regarding additional access for the site and also meeting with ABC regarding people coming onto our property to visit the memorial
  • McConnell AFB Thanksgiving Baskets - Rob Brown reported meet at McConnell Tuesday, November 25 at 7:00AM to help with Thanksgiving Baskets. Motion by Leroy Perkins, 2nd by Chuck Barshney to donate $250 toward the pies for the baskets. Motion passed unanimously
  • 2015 Dues - pay no later than December 31; cards won’t be available until November
  • Elections - nominations in December, elections in January
  • Flags at Post - Navy’s Birthday – Monday, October 13 - up Doug/Vern Trenkle; down Jerry Ward/Rob Brown

New Business/Reminders:

  • Post Cleanup Tuesday, October 21, 6:00PM
  • ALR Coins are available - $5.00
  • Request from Smith Mortuary to help with lowering/raising flag - after discussion consensus was to leave this responsibility with Smith Mortuary due to non-availability of volunteers
  • Operation ALR 136 Holiday Surprise - post donated $200, we now have $515 for our December visit
  • Honor Flight - Ron Vangas asked that anyone wanting to go as a group to get him their application. Ron also still has raffle tickets available
  • Discussion regarding if ALR 136 wants to host the 2015 State Rally. Agreed to form a committee and submit application to Department ALR Chairman. Committee members: Ron Vangas, Phil Giovanni, Chuck Barshney, Ben Roloff, Diana Nelson, Greg Bauer, Jerry Berry, John Metz.

  • 23 riders participated in the Banana Run on August 3
  • Next Banana Run is December 7 - Duane asked for ideas for Christmas gifts for the patients
  • September 9 - VA is having a Homeless Veteran Summit (seminar) 9AM-4PM. Duane is trying to get more information.

Legion Commander (John Metz):

  • Reminder everyone that Legion is sponsoring Beer Garden, August 15 and 16th
  • Volunteers to work Beer Garden are asked to attend meeting at the post Wednesday, August 13 at 6PM

Co-Director (Steve Coberley):

  • Vickie Kalous reported that the Auxiliary will be having a Mexican Food Night on September 6

Fundraising Chairperson (Diana Nelson):

  • October will be German Month - something is planned for every Thursday night during October and there will be a special German dinner towards end of month - more info to follow

Patriot Guard and Road Captain (Darkhorse):

  • Darkhorse reported that Dennis Joynt attended the funeral of a State Trooper in West Virginia - 39 ride hours and 2,685 miles

Old Business:

  • Jarhead is Road Captain for Old Settlers Parade – Saturday, August 16 - meet at the post at 9:45AM, wear cowboy hats and red shirts, there will be 3 candy stops along the parade route
  • New hats are in, those that have pre-ordered and not paid, contact Doug
  • Motion from Greg Bauer and 2nd by Phil Giovanni to give a free hat to new members; motion passed unanimously
  • Operation ALR 136 Surprise - 4 members went to McConnell Commissary and gave out $270 to junior enlisted personnel and families
  • Since the vote last month was very close on whether or not to give to the Legacy Run, “the hat” was passed and $153.00 was collected to go towards the Run
  • Honor Flight – ALR 136 members Dennis Joynt, Duane Kalous, and Jerry Kirk

New Business:

  • State Rally in Dodge City is September 12-14 - Motel information has been emailed, registration is due in August 15th or fee goes from $30.00 to $40.00. Those wishing to ride to the Rally meet at Derby QT at 11:00AM on Friday, September 12
  • American Veteran Traveling Tribute in El Dorado - September 4-7. If you want to set up a ride to join El Dorado on the 4th - contact Doug
  • Operation Comfort Warrior – Fort Riley – phase 2 – consensus was to let KC area handle
  • Committee was formed to set up Flag Etiquette Team – Committee Chairman: Jim Finneran; committee members: Rick Babinger, Ron Vangas, and Andy Webb
  • Post Insurance on ALR Shed - Greg Bauer will have his agent review our policies on all buildings and property and report back to Commander
  • Flags at Post - Monday September 1 ( Labor Day) – Flags up Doug Lehman & Deb Lynch and Down - Doug Grant & Rick Babinger
  • Flags at VA hospital for Thursday, September 11 (Patriot’s Day) – 0700 - RC- Ron Vangas
  • Discussed ALR 10 - Winfield’s Annual Bug Run – Saturday, August 23 (see ALR Calendar) - not doing an organized ride due to safety concerns riding back in the dark
  • Mulvane Veteran Memorial – Ron Vangas brought up the idea of a Mulvane Memorial and recommended a committee be formed to look at options. Committee Chairman: Ron Vangas; committee members: Jerry Armstrong, Greg Bauer, Gary Donaldson, Terry Houck, Brad Modlin, and Russ Wallace
  • 2015 ALR Scholarship – motion by Ron Vangas and 2nd by Phil Giovanni to obligate $1000; motion passed unanimously

  • Chicken Fried Steak Dinner & Karaoke will be Saturday, July 26. Dinner from 5:00-8:00p.m. Karaoke at 6:00p.m. ALR is paying for the steaks and oil from $200 in fish fry obligated monies and Dennis McDonough’s $50 donation. Portion of profit to pay $250 Post loan.

Old Business:

  • Sheriff’s Department Law Camp Tuesday, July 15. Jim Finneran asked for riders to be at the East side of Lake Afton by 1:00p.m. to ride in with the flags. Flag retirement ceremony will be Friday, July 18.
  • Old Settler’s Parade – stage at the Post at 9:45a.m., depart at 10:15a.m., parade at 11:00a.m. 3 stops to pass out candy.
  • Only 1 person has volunteered to help with the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall in Chanute

● Salute to Veterans Rally- Cripple Creek- August 15-17

New Business:

  • Rick Babinger made a motion, 2nd by Phil Giovanni to spend $100 for the ALR Plaque to go up at the post. Motion passed unanimously.
  • Doug presented new ALR hat design and cost options. Motion by Sherry Evans, 2nd by Jerry Kirk to purchase 72 hats. Cost is $11.50 per hat. Doug will try to get price reduced.
  • Dennis McDonough made a motion, 2nd by Jerry Kirk to donate $250, which Dennis would match, to the Legacy Run. After discussion, motion did not pass.
  • Paint Sheds - volunteers need at the Post Saturday, July 19 at 9:00a.m.
  • Upcoming Director’s Meeting will be at our Post - date TBD. If you have input, contact Doug

  • Operation ALR 136 Surprise went well. Monika & Chuck Barshney donated $100 as did the ALR

New Business:

  • Memorial Day Riders: Doug Lehman, Jerry Kirk, Ron Vangas, Rick Johnson, Phil Giovanni, Jim Finneran, Dane Nixon, Ron Herndon, John Wise, Bruce Simmons, John Kaufman, Norm Prue, Greg Bauer, Jerry Armstrong, and Terry Houck.
  • Rob Brown is placing a notebook in the Canteen for volunteers to sign up to work the booth on Old Settlers Days
  • Doug discussed lack of support at other Post events that is, if we expect them to come to our events, we have to go to theirs
  • Doug reminded everyone’s support is needed at ALL events. Attendance has been down at funerals, fund raisers, etc.
  • Two Wheel Tuesday will be at Merle’s Place, 400 N Seneca, Wichita, May 6, meet at 6:00PM

Floor Opened to the Membership:

  • JoAnn Brown who works at Cypress Springs Assisted Living in Wichita is asking members to attend an event on May, 31at 11:00AM. This is to recognize members of the residence who are veterans. They are making a memory wall for the residents to view.
  • Buz Nye shared an idea for fundraiser during Mulvane’s Old Settlers Days by having Nick Gibson & his band play on Saturday night. The cost may be $1500 depending on how contract is written. Should bring in a lot of money and maybe have Steve Huckabee do Karaoke on Friday night. Buz suggest that all Legion groups share in the cost and profit. It will be discussed at Legion Meeting.
  • Director asked that everyone check their information on latest membership list and correct, if not accurate.

  • Banana Run - had a small turnout - handed out sacks to 84 patients & nurses. Next Banana Run August 3
  • VA is stilling looking for help in moving patients around
  • Homeless Veteran Moves – once more definitive plans are developed, then the ALR will get involved

  • Warren Johnston reported that Post Elections will be Monday, April 7

  • Read thank you letters from the VA, Major Jacob Smith, and Dave and Elizabeth Rumley

  • SAL performed first cleanup of the Post

Ladies Auxiliary President (Deb Lynch):

  • Auxiliary Elections will be Monday, April 7
  • Deb thanked everyone who has helped to clean up and organize the kitchen

Fundraising Chairperson (Diana Nelson):

  • Post and ALR will participate in Mulvane City Wide Garage Sale May 10 and Derby City Wide Garage Sale May 17

Patriot Guard and Road Captain (Darkhorse):

  • Motorcycle Safety Class for ALR 136 members will be scheduled with class room in AM and PM course riding date (TBD)

Director (Doug Lehman):

  • 3 Scholarship applications have been received. Officers will individually review, rank applicants, and report the winner.
  • Director and Co-Director attended the Central KS ALR Run meeting in McPherson. This will be a 2-day event. The Run will not a fundraiser. Proposed locations being determined by ALRs from Chapman, Hillsboro, Lindsborg, Newton, and McPherson and possible dates are Jul 26-27, Sep 20-21, or Sep 27-28.
  • Operation ALR 136 Surprise at McConnell. Chuck Barshney will donate $100 towards the first visit with ALR 136 giving $100 as well. Jerry Berry made a motion & seconded by Jerry Ward that we make the visits quarterly instead of monthly and we obligate $200 per quarter. Motion carried unanimously.
  • Patriot Guard Highway cleanup is Sunday, April 13. Meet at the Post at 10:30 AM, depart at 10:45 AM. Come enjoy breakfast about 9:30 AM. Bring a dish or make a donation.
  • Sunday morning Breakfast Group has donated the first $250 payment towards loan on building restoration

New Business: Jim Finneran asked for at least 7 riders attend the opening ceremonies for Sheriff Department’s LAW Camp (camp for at risk kids - ages 11-15). Jim is asking for at least 7 riders to attend the opening ceremony on July 15 and closing ceremony on July 18 by bringing the flags in for the opening and closing ceremonies. If interested please contact Doug Lehman, dlehman4@cox.net.

Two Wheel Tuesday: Suggestions have been made for Annie Mae’s CafĂ©, Benton Airport, Hangar One. For now, we’ll do these rides about every 2 weeks or so.

Floor Opened to the Membership: Jerry Allen brought up idea of giving free drink tokens to McConnell groups that we meet so they can come to our Post for a free drink and possibly join. Rick Babinger pointed out that this is not legal with the Kansas liquor laws.

50/50: Collected $ 53.00- Gary Donaldson donated his $26.50 to building fund.

Special Guest: Pat Thacker brought Gold Star Mother - Betty Jean Pulliam to the meeting. Betty has moved to Cooperstone in Derby.

Chaplains Corner (Ron Herndon) Sick Call update: No report

Veteran’s Coordinator (Duane Kalous):

  • Next Banana Run- Sunday, March 16
  • Operation Troop Care - only one person’s name received thus far
  • Homeless Vet Moves - Duane will contact Helping Hands to see if we can get more advance notice before a move

Legion Commander (RG Reser):

  • Legion District Convention - April 25-26
  • Elections for Post Officers at April 7 meeting
  • Fish Fry at Post - March 22 – 4PM
  • Scholarship deadline April 15

Co-Director (Steve Coberley): No correspondence

SAL Commander (Jerry Armstrong):

  • SAL will be the first to do the monthly cleaning of the post – April 5 – 9AM
  • Next fundraiser will be for $500 Visa Gift Card and $250 Visa Gift Card - only 150 tickets @ $10.00 each

Patriot Guard and Road Captain (Darkhorse):

  • Letter was read from US Army Lt Col (retired) Don & Corbell Ames - they donated $1000 to ALR 136
  • Report from attendance at Central-KS ALR Run Meeting in McPherson - first meeting was fact finding. 28 Chapters involved and 20 Chapters attended meeting. ALR 136 needs to decide will it be Fun Run or Fundraiser - majority wanted Fun Run. ALR 136 is recommending 2-day event. Membership wants more information and questions answered. Doug Lehman & Steve Coberley will attend next meeting March 29 and report back to the Chapter.
  • Lenexa ALR 407 is doing a surprise ride to Deems “Doc” Peterson’s house in Lenexa on Saturday April 15. Darkhorse will RC group from 136 to make this ride.
  • Motorcycle Safety Class for 136 will be scheduled with classroom/riding course. Specifics be worked. Date TBD.
  • Patriot Guard Highway Cleanup is April 13

Director (Doug Lehman):

  • Reminded membership of scholarship deadline of March 28. Will be extended if necessary. Application and eligibility criteria sent to Mulvane High School, Mulvane Police Department, and Mulvane News.
  • Discussed previous issues with Department approval of hat design – open
  • Scott Hansen is handling flag ordering and sales - will provide inventory and sales at April meeting
  • Discussed options for supporting McConnell AFB junior enlisted personnel. Considered helping with the Enlisted Spouses Club by serving home cooked meal in the dorms once a month. Open. Monika Barshney suggested we start a program similar to Operation Holiday Surprise where we go to the commissary and pay for a portion of junior enlisted members’ grocery bill. Jerry Berry made a motion to donate up to $100 per visit. Motion passed.
  • Discussed revitalizing Two-Wheel Tuesday. First ride to Jose Peppers March 11
  • Vickie Kalous suggested having online banking access for our account for Director, Co-Director and Financial Officer. Motion made by Jerry Ward, second by Jerry Kirk. Motion passed unanimously.
  • Rick Babinger mentioned final moving items in storage at the Post Saturday 9AM
